transmission jack

i know you innovative guys have made transmission jacks -i don't have enough money to buy something i will only use once in a blue moon -so far i have a floor jack and made a removable 1/4 inch plate --kinda wanted to know how you tilted the tranny

I seem to remember seeing some kind of adapter for sale somewhere that gos on a floor jack to work on transitions.

NAPA and Princess auto have both had them on sale recently. NAPA I think still does... in the 600 buck range. Princess was much cheaper but I think that's over with...
If you need it more than once I'd go that route, and most certainly if it's more than a half ton truck type transmission.
A basic floor jack is NOT stable enough to handle a large transmission.

But... if you want to spend the time you need to install an adjuster in the leveling bar to tilt the table fore and aft as well as a pivot to allow the table to roll side to side. Four bolts under the table will suffice to do that...

I had a truck transmission down this summer... and I though about being cheap and making something for a floor jack. I'm glad I didn't. I just borrowed a jack. I'd have had the damn thing on top of me if I hadn't.

A man with some ratchet straps and a good imagination can do what ever it takes to get it done. One or two to hold it to a floor jack with a large plate. Then one or two to jack it up, down, right, left, ect.

Harbor Freight has an adapter. I bought one and used it once. It was OK, but not nearly as easy to use as the dedicated transmission jack I had used in previous jobs. I think the adapter was about $50 or $60. Good luck!

I was once a transmission jack. :o) When I was a young punk I once pulled the automatic transmission out of a 1957 Ford 1 ton truck and reinstalled it myself. Laying on the ground I pulled the transmission on top of myself and then wrestled it up in place. That probably wasn't too smart as I could have knocked a few teeth out or something if it got away on me.

I would rent one from a reantal place , if you only needed it for a couple days. Beats the price of buying for a one time use.

Look your jack setup over pretty good before you use it. The tranny can tilt and slide right off of it real quick and you don't want to use your body to cushion the fall when it comes down.

Back in my young and dumb days I was replacing a tranny in a 62 Chevy straight truck using a plain old hydraulic jack. Had it up on the jack ready to push it in the bellhousing with my neighbor up in the cab steering it with the gear shift lever. The tranny slipped off the jack with me under it but my neighbor was quick enough to get hold of the shifter and hold the tranny up so it wouldn't go down. He was up there in the cab suspending the tranny by the gearshift, screaming colorful language to me in a strained voice. I did get the jack back in place and the tranny put in but I've used a bonified tranny jack ever since then. Jim

You can buy a floor-jack adapter - to make it into a transmission jack with all the tilt adjustments. Costs around $40.

I've got to pull out my third truck trans soon, and I finally broke down and bought a Harbor Freight 2000 lb. trans-jack and love it. I don't know how I did without it for the past 50 years. But, I used to be a heck of a lot stronger and just horsed stuff out.

Shipping was going to be $120, so we drove 100 miles to the store (my first time). To my surprise, they sold me the jack for $249 - which is way cheaper then what is shown on-line.

I think a person would be crazy to not buy that jack for anything up to a small Road Ranger. Then you'd need a bigger one... but for that price, even for a one time use... definitely the way to go.

I agree 100%. I've borrowed a jack a few times in the past from a local shop. I paid the guy $25 each time. This one I just bought works much nicer and is twice the jack. I just used it for the first time, and it's already paid for itself. Pulled out a GM 4L60 and NP transfer-case - together as a unit. Didn't have to separate them first, as I've done in the past.

If that HF jack had an OTC label on it, it would cost way over $1000.

Me too I was putting a trensmissiom and clutch in my old dodge as I was under the truck sweating, struggeling and swearing a car pulled up and a couple of Jehovas wittnesses got out and started to try to convert the heathen under the truck, now Im starting to loose some of my composure and start getting GRUMPY still trying to put that transmission in its sitting on my chest so,one of them says to me "God will help you" and I hollered "Tell him to get under this f-ing thing and put this Gawd danged trannie in" well all i heard was footsteps and car doors slamming and they left, transmissiom went in on the next try!

Rented 1000 pounder from nationwide "green equipment" chain to do Dodge clutch (NV 5600, 6 speed, cast iron housing transmission). Cost $87.00 for week. Other truck will need same shortly, probably buy HF unit.
