Transmission Leak

I just got this 49' 8N running that I flushed the rear and trans and filled with new Hi-Tran. I have a leak from the cotter pin that is right in front of the Trans drain. My guess from looking at the I&T shop manual is it might be from the counter shaft. Any advice would be appreciated. I just bought this tractor from a guy who had it as a lawn ornament for the last ten years and when I checked the trans and rear fluid it was low so I suspect when I flushed filled to the marker on the stick it is at a higher level and now leaks. Just thought I would get some advise before I pull it apart. I am restoring so I want to go after the leak.

Yep, not the counter shaft, but the front tranny shaft seal, about $3, but you do have to do the split.

Mine leaked on the clutch plate till it swelled to where it would not release.

I just went through this with my 9n, the first time I split the tractor I just replaced the input shaft seal, since the leak was still there I split a second time and replaced the counter shaft seal(paper gasket). As long as you are going to split go ahead and replace both seals.

Cubby.......yep, tranny input shaft seal ($3, cheap) but ya gotta split yer tractor to do it. Ittza 4-bolt, 15-min job AFTER you gotter split. Takes about 4-hrs for experienced shadetree mechanics to split the N-Tractor. Guys like Hobo, Zane, John Smith can do it in 1-hr. Yer call.

In the meantime, remove the 6-o'clock bottom bolt in the 6-in hydro-dipstick plate behind yer right heel and let yer OVERFILL drain out and down the side of yer tranny overnite. That will stop yer tranny front seal leak and yer rearaxle seals from greasing yer brakes too.

And yes, there's supposed to be 2-cotter keys to keep the clutch housing drains clear.

Surprizingly enuff, you don't need 5-gals of hydro-tranny fluid to operate yer 3-point pump. 4-1/2 gals is plenty enuff. ......Dell

That is good news. I have split my own 8N in the past so I am set up for that. I am just glad it is not a tranny overhaul. Didn't want to get that deep into things. Thanks for everyone's advice. This discussion forum / and your guys advice is a lifesaver.

Thanks,
Cubby
