Anybody have any ideas who might have made this transplanter?? Its been barn kept for 40 years or more. Light surface rust but works. What might it be worth?

It looks alot like a Holland or Mechanical. Both transplanter used the same design. New they run about $1200.00 to $1400.00. In your condition and depending on our market maybe $300.00 to $500.00. A new set of fingers and chain run about $350.00.

Is the water tank with it? Extra pockets? All the sprockets? Here in southern Kentucky if all needed items were with it, they bring $75-150. One rows in great shape often bring more than 2 row units. Market gardeners want the 1 rows. I've got 2, one nearly new, & 1 worn out that I cut the chain off, pipe clamped a 1.5" pipe where the pockets were, and use to plant large garden & pumpkins.

I can't be sure, but it looks like Holland Transplanter to me. They have a web site, I called them once, they were very helpful. Look for a tag, or casting numbers, then get ahold of them. If its Holland or Mechanical brand the parts are available. Is it 3 point? Does it have a water valve, chain, plant "pockets"? Holland should have a tag by where your legs are when seated.

It’s Holland or a Mechanical

As I understand the story: The two old guys worked together and started the Holland planter company.

We had a Holland planter many years ago to plant tobacco.

Some years later, the old guys got into it about something; it may have been the water delivery system as that is about all that’s different in the two machines. (Older machines like the one in the picture).

One guy left the company and started making a very similar planter, but named it Mechanical.

I currently have a 3 pt hitch, one row Mechanical planter with a 50 gal water barrel attached to the frame of the planter. Great little self contained planter unit.

Both are good products, many advances have been made to the planters of today.

Fix it up, they were great little machines. Works perfect with a small Ford or Ferguson tractor.

My wife sat on something similar for many days when she was a teenager....setting tomato and sweet potato plants. She and her sister were usually almost sick when they got off because her Dad didn't have enough sense to rout the exhaust up instead of back (M-F 35).
