Transporting a haybine

I am looking to buy a NH haybine from a guy about 50 miles away. How can I get it home? If I have someone haul it, does the tongue have to come off? Is there an easy way to transport it?

I bought a Gehl 2365 from a guy 50 miles away. 10 foot cut side pull disc mower/conditioner. That thing is wider than my 15 foot cut 2415 center pivot I have now.

Side pull haybines are nerve racking to pull. Your vehicle is always on the yellow lines while the implement is taking out mailboxes. Plan the route to avoid narrow roads and steep embankments. Be prepared to put it in the ditch when meeting oncoming traffic. Bring two spare tires and the tools to change them. Check the wheel bearings and repack and tighten them if necessary. Plan the trip during a known low traffic time like early Sunday morning. Take it easy. Good luck.

Forgot to mention - make sure you lock the lift. Bouncing down the road can cause a hose to burst or a seal to go out in the cylinder. Unlikely, but can be a real pain if the thing drops on you on the way home

I have pulled two for long distances 140 miles and 160 miles behind my truck. I did it the easy no drama way. I called the state DOTs. One was across state lines. They told me exactly how to do it. They sent a permit, told me about signs and lights etc. and gave me routing which included as much interstate as possible. It is way easier and safer on the highway than on two lane which is why of course they want you there.

Like posted below hook to that machine at daylight on Sunday morning. There will be no traffic. If you have lots of hills and back roads having someone in front of you with flashers is not a bad idea.Tom

You're over thinking it. Put a draw pin in it and go. Dad and I used to pull things home 150 miles from Archbold Ohio all the time, never gave it a thought. I wouldn't use a chase car or anything, it just gives the idiots a longer train to have to pass when they shouldn't, and they will.
