trick to remove roll-pins

I"m haveing a tough time driving out a couple roll pins that hold the steering U-joints on the shafts on a Case 800 tractor. I"m sure they"ve been in there 50 years or so. I know drilling is not an option without breaking bits. Any other tricks. they act like they don"t move at all.

High quality penetrating fluid, tap, tap, tap, heat, tap, tap, tap, penetrating fluid, tap, tap, tap..and so on and so fourth until one of you gives up.

You need to get something that dont bounce with a larger hole behind it and a hardened punch a bit smaller and be smacking it hard with a big big hammer. If you could build a small enough punch for an air hammer it would make it easyer.

If it's in an area you can heat it with a torch,let it cool then soak it for a few days or even a week with penetrating oil. Use the right size punch. A punch to small will cause the end of the roll pin to swell.

Heat them to knock out the temper? Depends on situation, of course, but if the U-joints are being changed. A torch through the roll pin will not heat much else and then they can be removed much more easily by brute force methods including careful drilling.

I use my air hammer I took a broken air hammer tool and welded a nut on the end so as to leave a resess on the end put your glove on hold the roll pin punch in the resess and it will remove pins real easy. Don

A pin punch with a centering nubin on the punch end helps put all the hammer's force on only the pin.

Kroil should help with the rusty pin also.

Heat, and then drift it out unless the heat is going to get at something and cause harm...

Go buy a set of roll pin punches. Not real expensive and solve the problem. Got mine from Matco, I think.

do you mean "tapered steel pin", instead of "Rollpin"?

I've hardly EVER met a Rollpin that wouldn't come out with a rollpin punch and a good-sized "fitting tool".

Back up the part with the pin, with a heavy piece of iron. May take another hand. Sometimes this keeps the part you are hitting from bouncing. stan
