Tripping more

Anyone in their golden years tripping and falling more. In the last month I have fallen two times, both times in a hurry. One time I was getting down from my tractor on my trailer. I was falling backward. I grabbed the tractor tire and rolled backward on the trailer fender. No harm done. Next time rushing to get to my job on time, while unloading my tractor tripped on the road berm, and did a face plant on the road. Just got a black eye, and a skinned arm. I guess I need to be more careful, if that is possible. You guys be careful out there, even you young guys and gals. Stan
Didn't think you older fellers were into that psychedelic stuff.....😉

I earned myself a FALL HAZARD bracelet at the hospital for my colonoscopy this spring. There's no doubt it was earned, I told them yes when they asked me. I hope it's my sleep medication that's to blame. I take a benzodiazepine.

Edit: Wow, uncanny timing, Russ.

I'm 73, my balance is getting awful. Doubt that I could pass a soberity test if pulled over. I use a cane most of the time, cords and hoses like to jump under my feet, gets worse as the day goes on. I need to walk more but then my hip starts hurting. I used a long pole to change a light bulb in the shed today and lost my balance looking straight up to change it. My legs are weak, Dr. said to walk more. I'm driving truck hauling to the sprayers, While waiting, I walk 3 or 4 light poles from the truck and back, not sure it has helped yet.

Age 69 and the last year or two I just seem to be banging into things as I move around, even walking through doorways, hitting my elbow or hands. I can sense my balance isn’t what it used to be.

WOW, I guess I'm not alone. Going on 76 and some days I can trip over something 1/2 inch high. I don't step over anything without something to hold on to. My balance is OK but the pain in my hips and low back makes it hard to correct any misstep. I get mad if I drop anything on the floor because it hurts so much to pick it up.

I am 76, My Apple phone has been a big help with my fitness. It makes me more aware of getting adequate steps during the day, which helped me a few years back to lose thirty pounds. Even with two new knees and one hip, they will still hurt in the PM, so I start right off early in the AM at daylight to walk a mile. My phone also keeps track of heart rate while I walk. I was not able to walk much for two months while recovering from foot surgery, so I am working at regaining my cardio fitness. I am gaining about three tenths of VO2 max/day by pushing hard while walking. I need to get back into above average fitness. Maybe in three weeks.

Gravity will remind you it's there, more often than not.

After 83(?) years on this planet, you've earned your right to take your time.

Please be careful.

Mike

I watched a video on balance the other day. Recommended not walking stooped over looking at ground , rather walk erect scanning ahead and down looking for obstacles. I find this helpful at 81.

Like Momma always yelled when under her car "PICK UP YOUR FEET!!"

Flip flops going up stairs get me often as the front of the sole hits the step.

Cause I did not do what Momma said!

I watch where I'm walking. I sprained my ankle very badly as a teen - ever since then, step on any small rock or branch... and oopsie, I am on the ground.

I have learned over time how to do pretty good as long as I have my eyes open and the room is properly lit.
I have instinctively learned to always look at my feet when walking.
Doctors did several test and said it is loss of proprioception due to Idiopathic neuropathy.

Coming up on 71 and when walking in a field, forest or my house I need to be aware of where my next footstep lands. If not, trip with bruises and the occasional blood will occur. 37 Chief, you made the right moves with the tractor on trailer, good to read that one ended well. While loading our MF on a C600 flatbed my helper dropped left side front wheel off the edge. He knew to slam loader onto flatbed surface and it all stopped. I can't recall being that frightened even including the year stationed at Nakhon Phanom, Thailand. It took us awhile to figure a way to get front axle back on truck and we got it centered using loader with pipes for rollers and pulling gently on bucket with Spot the Truck. Spot name came from rust showing in body. I bought the 1980 Chevy C10(?) with str8 6 while living NJ then drove it across the country when we moved back to California, our home. We were doing a subdivision in Orangevale, near Sacramento, and headed down to help our families in San Jose after the 89 earthquake. For added fun the engine let go but was able to coast down into Livermore. It was a good truck so put a crate 350 under hood. Then I had a load of firewood shift and put it into a solid oak, pushing engine through firewall. That was when I learned that parting out older vehicles is the best option as long as you have somewhere to do it and are not under time constraints. Here is a picture of Spot and the wife's lux coupe in front of the house we rebuilt in Mt. Olive, NJ. MtOlive2.jpg Her car did quite well on snow and neither did very well on glare ice. The house came out nice although we had to lift it and remove soggy cinder block then replace with concrete block that is impervious to water. The other lesson is railroad ties aren't the best choice for edging a walk way up to front door and sitting on one when the temperature is over 80F leaves a mess on the posterior. Short version answering question; YEP.
