Trouble 450 clutch

Got the tractor all back together. Trans shifts well w/ engine not running. I adjusted the clutch and ta by the book. 1" freeplay on clutch, when ya start tractor in neutral, clutch is disengaged as it should be, but when you try to shift into first it just grinds. I then adjusted it to the end of the rod in slow increments at a time. My results never changed, still grinding. I even used a cheat rod to make it longer, and my results were still the same except the clutch pedal bottomed out. I know this because from looking the inspection plate the three p.plate fingers were against the plate housing at their max. The only thing that I can think of is the flywheel friction surface will have to be machined to let the p.plate release. I"m I correct or not any suggestions would be great before I split again. I'm assuming that you have a pilot bearing that is new/free to turn??? Did the pilot shaft get in the pilot bearing OK?? Is the clutch disc in the right way?? Did it fit in the flywheel without binding? Can you see if the fingers are pushing in on the pressure plate?? Something isn't correct here. Let us know.

How about the throwout bearing?? Is it free to slide on it's shaft?? Maybe jammed at the pressureplate fingers?? Did you put a small amount of high temperature grease on the clutch disc splines before assembly??

Clutch Had a tollerance around the flywheel. Fingers are connecting to the p.plate and moving the fingers in when pedal is pushed down. I can see this through the inspection plate hole. New pilot bearing spun freely, installed correctly. Clutch will only fit one way because if its turned wrong the center hits the flywheel before disc contacts the surface. The only thing I'm not sure of is the shaft going into the pilot bearing, but you cant vissibly see this when your putting it back together, but clutch was centered with the p.plate and the disc and aligned correctly before I slid it back together.

Nothing is jambed it all slides freely on the shaft, engages the fingers correctly. I just don't know. This isn't my first clutch job, I'm just puzzled.

sounds like clutch is in backwards did this 2 wks ago on and H and one of my helpers thought clutch would only go one way but we were wrong ,you should be able to put tractor in gear (engine off) depress clutch pedal and be able to push tractor back and forth if you can't something is bound up ,if you look at clutch disk the side with the metal plate on will fit inside the flywheel , if you have the metal plate towards pressure plate it will be direct drive, the one I installed backwards bent the plate slightly had to modify it slightly to get it back in shape

Clutch disc will only fit one way. If it's put in backwards it hits the center before friction surfaces meet.

NO 1 Did you align with tool or eye.
No 2 you bolted P P and clutch disc tight to flywheel before attaching two halves of tractor together?
No 3 if so you have warped the disc.
No 4 remove the disc.install another new one.
No 5 this time put PP on shaft install disc in front of it.
No 6 attach two halves.
No 7 you still have the (BATTERY) unhooked coil wire removed.
No 8 go up through the bottom of clutch housing opening inspection hole install bolts in PP assembly.

First try setting your throw out bearing against the levers and see if the clutch will release. Don"t run the tractor for very long. If it doesn"t release check the lever height it should be 1 1/4" to 1 3/8" from the tip of the lever down to the backplate. If it"s at that spec split the tractor and check your flywheel step it should be 1.406 look over your disk and make sure it didn"t get pushed and bent when the tractor went back together.

I would try this first.
Adjust the clutch pedal for the proper free play (1"). Have someone push the clutch pedal in & out while laying under it. You should be able to see it move. (Or you could prop the pedal in with a peice of wood). If the pressure plate is releasing you should be able to rotate the drive shaft (trans in neutral). May need a long screw driver or other tool to do it. If it won't rotate something is wrong with the clutch and you'll need to remove it.

Is it a "fabric" disc or one of the cerametallic discs??
