Troybilt Horse Engine Swap

Anyone mount a Chinese engine on one of these?

I have the old HH60 Tecumseh on it now but its living on borrowed time. The previous owner sold it to me when he ran it out of oil - I "broke" it free, flushed it out and its run ok for two years but definately burns its share of oil. I've never run a new one but I'm sure 30+ years of use and the no oil incident has it pretty low on power.

I've been looking at a 7HP "Duromax" to replace the Tecumseh. It appears to fit the requirements.

It looks like its pretty much the same engine as what is selling under Kohler's name.

I had the 6hp Tecumseh on this tiller. I only paid $100.00 for the tiller and sold the engine for $65.00. I bought a 10hp B&S engine with electric start from the smallenginewarehouse in 2006. It has plenty of power. I replaced the tines and seals behind the the tine holder. They're held on with a 1/2-NC X 6 inch bolt. They're not hard to replace. I repainted the tiller too. Hal

In the shop where I work I put a Harbor Freight chinese engine on a Troybilt Horse last year. It was pretty straightforward swap, with the exception that I had to get the owner to round up the correct metric bolts to mount the engine to the tiller. (Better him doing the parts run than paying me to do it).

Everything bolted up fine, the bolt pattern in the crankcase flange was the same with the exception that the threads were metric.

While tilling my garden this morning with my 1973 Troy-Bilt, I think the connecting rod broke. I heard a pop and now the crankshaft just just free spins with pistion at top of cylinder. I have an eight horse Briggs I can use, but it has a 1" crank and the Tecumseh is 3/4". Is there a pulley available? This has the reversing wheel on the back end of the pulley.

I think you will need to get another engine that has the 3/4 shaft and the same bolt pattern as the Tecumseh engine. Smallenginewarehouse should have a new engine. Hal

You need the same bolt pattern used on the Tecumseh to bolt this engine to tiller mount. It's held on by 3/8 cap screws. It's item No.34. Hal

I haven't been able to find a 1" pulley for the Horse model. If I could I would mount a much larger (heavier) engine used engine.
