Turbocharge a D

I have a 41 D and a old turbo that I was thinking about putting on the D. I don't want to make it actually work just want it to look like it does, but what I want to know is if a D has enough oil pressure and flow to keep the turbo cool and provide pressure to the rocker arms is I tie the turbo in to the line going from the block to the valve cover, again I am going to make it look like it works but not actually force air into the engine.

Any ideas or opinions are appreciated,

You can always run an external oil pump driven off of 12 volt power.

You'll need a dump tank so the turbo has a place to blow air when the engine valves are closed.
 
No you canoot tee into the oil line to the rockers. That line is not pressurized, it is gravity flow from oil being splashed up by the governor gears. With a proper orfice the oil pump has plenty of capacity to lube the turbo in your application, but you"ll have to find a different source than rocker lube.
 
There is a 2 cyl diesel ( can't remember the model ) by me that a shop put a turbo on it. They did such a nice job it's not even noticable right away. Didn't help much for power though. The pop-pop can't get the turbo spining fast enough to create any good boost pressure. It does sound neat though.

Maybe that's why they are so angry. dang things flopping around. never thought of putting a jockstrap on them.

If you could effectively raise the compression on the D, it would make a big difference in HP.

Good to know that the line is not pressure I wonder If I could tap off the oil pressure gauge port and return to a tee in the rocker arm line. I guess If I can get oil pressure on it I will try putting the jock strap on the bull. Is their a better place to tap in for oil pressure or will I just not be able to get enough pressure and flow without major modifacation. I don't want to just gut it because I figured the turbo would give it a sound all its own.

I've seen one around here put on a 70 Diesel years ago,they pulled oil off the gauge port and dump through a fitting welded to the valve cover, it don't take as much oil as you would think. The biggest problem people have is putting to large of turbo on conversions like this, too large and you can't get it to boost up, a bit of thought on the cubic inches/RPM for working is needed, if you notice about everything has a blower on it these days, some on the smaller tractors are about the size of an alarm clock,,but do some good. If your gonna put it on give it a shot at being functional,,and try to keep your installation clean, the one in Green Mag was a bit sloppy....
 
I might try making it work but I don't know whether to pull from the carb or blow through it. The install will be done clean or not as all I don't believe in sloppy work, especially on something I take out to shows.

You will need to pull from the carb, it won't work well pressuring the carb,,actual I don't think it will deal with it at all, it would blow fuel out it's gills...
 
Keep the throttle linkage in mind as you go,,make a bracket out of light metal and bolt it up so you can flex and twist as you think it out,,some think this is an of-the-wall idea,,but you should see some of the ideas I have worked out,,they would think I needed a straight jacket :)..especially the one I'm working on now,,when I get farther along I'll be posting some pics...
 
only because the turbo is too large. the same cubic inches as a regular tractor, but 1/2 the RPM so you need a turbo 1/2 the size. they work fine if done right.
 
if you want it to function you need to use a turbo off an engine with
around 1/2 as many cubic inches, as you're only turning 1/2 as
many RPM, on a good day. more like 1/3. you can calculate the
necessary cfm you need, there is a formula, i forget where it is
though. use the formula for determining carb cfm. you only need
the cubic inches of the engine & the max rmp. this will give you an
idea of what size engine to take the turbo from, id say maybe like
an old 2300 ford or a 2.6 chrysler, but they may even be too big.
 
This is the turbo I am going to use whether it will work or not I just want the looks and maybe a little sound from it.

It is from a engine about the same displacement but three times as many RPM's so I doubt it will ever spool up but it may give me a little whistle I will probably gain no power from it even if I hook it up correctly and I won't gain any power from it but it will definately get looks and make people wonder why my D dosen't go put put like the other ones
 
Some of those D's make impressive power. Just with
some compression, a Berry Cam and the aftermarket
dual exhaust manifold. The later blocks will take a
7" bore.
 
Like I said I plan on doing it for looks, and this will catch a couple eyes even if it dosen't do any good and I loose a little power.
