need some opinions,, our tv remote is getting very difficult to change chanels.. is it more practical to get it repaired or buy another one..cost in the range of $35-$45.. it seems the buttons needs to be pressed very hard and it keeps getting harder to change chanels..thanks it is a dishnetwork remote

When I have had that problem in the past i would just go to Radio Shack and get a new one. This was for a TV on Direct TV System .Worked good.

It's not the battery. It's gunk inside and on the circuit board. You have a "mat' with carbon piles that make connections on the circuit board. This "mat" is rubber and what happens is that over time, a "liquid" gunk builds up on the circuit board and the connection is harder and harder to make.
Two choices...buy a universal
or...the thing snaps together...get a thin screwdriver or something and unsnap the two halves of the remote over...take the batteries out first. When you get it unsnapped, the "mat" will come out and you'll see the circuit board. Get some alcohol and wipe off the gunk on the circuit board and the rubber mat and carbon piles. Snap it back together. Hardest part is to to unsnap the remote halves.
This generally last a while but the problem comes back in a few months. I'll bet it's harder to push on the buttons that you use most frequently. Enjoy.

You can buy a universal remote control cheap ($4 or $5)at many of the stores such as Big Lots, drugstores and such. There will be instructions on how to program for your TV.

you could always just get up and change the channel the old fashioned way.

Prolly cost you more than it's worth to repair. You got nothing to loose, so just get some rubbing alcohol, kleenex and Q-tips, pop it apart and clean it. Same way you'd do a car key remote.

Take it apartand clean the rubber that contacks the electric board under each button with alcohol

Check out the link below. I have purchased remotes for several different TV brands with good results and the prices are reasonable. If you put a model number in they will guarantee it to work.

thanks to everyone for their help.. i'll probably get a universal remote, as some have suggested.. i will then take this one apart and try to clean it..if cleaning works, i'll 2 remotes, if it does't i will have one that works.. have a nice day

I also have a Dish system. It came with two remotes. One of them is for the TV we use the most, and it operates differently from the other remote which is in a bedroom and uses infrared, I think. I am wondering what we'll need to do to replace that one when it goes out.

A universal remote will work but generally they won't allow you to use the TV's menu system. I have purchased new Sony remotes for Sony TV's that do allow the use of the TV menu system and they only cost $6 on sale at ABC Warehouse. Your choice.

You might want to contact your local DISH contractor. Depending on how old your system is, and how long you have been a customer, they may replace that remote free, and may even upgrade the whole system free.

The problem with your remote is the contacts on the rubber membrane. Pop the halves of the remote apart. Take out the membrane. Then get a piece of a cardboard box. Lay the membrane on the cardboard. Push down each button and drag the contact surface across the cardboard. This will clean the contacts. I have done this many times on many remotes. You can also use a fine sand paper like 320 or 400 grit.

remove the back and carefully remove the board. between the board and front plate is a rubber plate for the buttons functions and their return. remove this plate, clean with mild soap and water, dry it then allow it to air dry for about an hour, put back together and it should work find.
