Two Cylinder sounds

I realize describing sounds is probably crazy but can anyone describe the difference in sounds made by various Waterloo (numbered) two cylinder tractors? For example, there is clearly a difference in sound between sizes of tractor (say a 50 vs. a 70). Also between gas vs. diesel tractors. But I also hear differences between eras (60 vs. 630). I believe they increased the RPMs with the intro of the 20 series, correct? This change must've affected the sound of these tractors. Of course, the 30 series had quieter, oval mufflers making yet a whole different set of sounds.

I'm wondering, all else being equal, what is the biggest difference maker as far as sound is concerned amongst these numbered tractors in stock configuration (no straight pipes). Is there a tremendous inherent difference in sound between, say, a 50 and a 530 or a 60 and a 630? Or is this just my imagination? Obviously, the larger bore motors will have a deeper sound but will the later tractors sound pretty much the same as their earlier counterparts at least in the lower RPM ranges? How much difference do the various mufflers make?

I know sound is a personal thing. For me, I really like the sound of a JD 60... and I'm trying to figure out why that sound seems to appeal to me as quintessential JD two cylinder sound. Maybe it's the displacement. Maybe it's the straight muffler. Maybe it's the lower RPM. Can anyone help me figure this out? What's your preference?

Manifolds make a difference too and mechanical things like how well the valves seal and timing and stuff like that also makes a difference. My 60 is an all fuel and has the manifold on it with the manual valve you could swap for cold or hot. My 60 sounds completely different from my A with the same stainless straight pipe. The other A has a drilled out muffler and it sounds completely different from all of them. I like the 48 A with the all fuel manifold and heavy wall stainless straight pipe the best. I too have noticed differences in sounds, there is this one G I have seen at shows that sounds completely different than most anything I’ve heard before (including other G’s) and I have no idea why but I like it.

Can anyone tell me the diameter of the muffler openings for a 530, 630 and 730? Are the 630 and 730 the same? Do they use the same muffler? I'm sure the larger diameter of the mufflers give them that deeper, throatier sound.

Alabamafrog, you going to be in Pulaski Tn. to listen to some of those two cylinder Deeres plowing this Sat.? I remember a "D" a "B" and mabey even a "530" pulling plows last year. The "D" pulled a big trailer disk plow.

The smaller tractors 30,40 and 420,430,320,330 run at a higher RPM is the main difference. They also sound steadier - don't have the cer-plunk, ker-plunk of the bigger tractors.
Smaller ones sound like the modern 2 cylinder Yanmars etc.
Look them up on YOUTUBE like search on "john deere 430" but w-o the quotes etc.
The 435's sound way different from the other 2 like they're screaming hard to just keep running.

Posterpop, thanks for the thoughts but I'm talking about Waterloo tractors here only. The Dubuque tractors are a whole other ball of wax.

There are several distinct types of the JD two cylinder sounds. The M/40/420/430/440
435/440ID,
B/50/520/530
A/60/620/630/G/70/720/730 gassers,
70/720/730/R/80/820/830/840 diesels
