Type C Transmission Fluid

I recently purchased an old Allis-Chalmers motor grader, Model M-100. The manual calls for "Type C transmission fluid for some of the gear boxes.

There are a number of different gear boxes for various controls. My inclination is to put regular old 90 wt. oil in them. Each is mechanically driven by shafts.

Does anyone know what Type C would be for a model year 1962 motor grader?

Thanks for the help.

I'm pretty sure its our modern Dexron/ Mercon. but lets see what the others think. 90 wt sounds good to me too if it is just a hand crank gear box.

Type C used to be torque converter oil. Most major oil suppliers still carry it.Closest Walmart off the shelf match would be Dexron.

I"m not sure but it runs up my mind that in the early days of automatic transmissions, General Motors was type A, and Ford was type C.

Run the question thru the archives at one of the Chev car sites; I had a 67 that called for type C, and I found out what the present equivalent was from the local Chev rebuilders, but can't remember now, except that it seems I had Dexron but was told to get one of the others. It comes up every time someone resurrects one of the 50s-60s models. It might even be posted on one of the Oil Co websites. Good luck.
