U Headlights

I have a 1951 UTU with replacement headlights that
are just not right. What size light goes on this
model? I know where some 7" lights are, but they
costly and I want to make sure I get the right
size. Thanks.

In mid 1951 I believe they changed to the smaller reflector type lights, 5 3/4" or something like that. I did a lot of research for my 1952 ZAU to get the correct lights on it, and that is what I found out. They are the same basic size as the ZB UB GB lights but were not a sealed beam. They were only used until 1953 when the newer models came out. Other brands also used the same light at that time.

Changeover on ZA from 7" to 5 3/4" headlights started after ZAU 00604140, ZAS 00700380, ZAN 00800234 and ZAE 00900367, which was about 4/5 of the way thru the 1950 model run. The Knoedler Flote-Ride seat was also introduced at the same numbers. This info from repair catalog R-1072C printed Jan. 1951. Anyone out there with a U catalog of the same vintage who can cross-reference similar info?

I HAVE SEEN THEM NEW (SECONDARY MARKET)RECIENTLY THEY WERE APPROXIMATELY $80ea AND THE REAR LIGHT WITH THE WHITE/RED LAMPS WERE APPROX $110ea.

I FOUND THEM IN THE OLIVER PAGES BUT I CANT REMEMBER WHAT BOOK FOR SURE. I'M PRETTY SURE I COULD FIND THEM AGAIN, IF YOU WOULD LIKE FOR ME TO LOOK E-MAIL ME.

yonson, the "R" catalog shows that they switched lights at the beginning of the 1951 model year. The "U" catalog changed at No. 01108298, which is mid-51 and shows the new lights, but they may have been switched over by then. My No. R-1056B catalog for the "U" is dated 1949 and of course shows only the older, bigger lights. Hope this helps. Jim

My repair manual for U MM dated 12-50" (R1056E) for U with 283A-4 engine shows a different head and tail light no. for those to No. 0110400 and different part no. for 01104001 and after. Also shows a different lens no. If you send me the ser no of your UTU--I can tell you the part no, but it does not list the dimentions for any of the lights or lenses--just the bulb no"s.
