U Pulling tractor speed in gears

Ok I Have a bunch of questions, I am new to pulling.

what is the moline classes good in? mph? (what speed), open classes? in what gears?

how fast do they go in 1st 2nd and 3rd gear? (please state your tire size)

will the moline u pull competivly in 5000 or is that to light?

My opinion: U's are competitive in class from 4500lbs to 8500lbs. Just depends on rules and how much you do to the tractor to get it competitive. For example, pulling 6mph in a 5500lb class will not take as much 'tractor' as pulling 6mph in a 8500lb class. either figure out what classes you want to pull in and build the tractor accordingly or figure out your budget, build the tractor to that budget and pull in the classes that the tractor will do well in.

When i was looking for tires, etc i put together a spreadsheet for speeds in each gear. This is for a UTU (a UTS would be a little different). I calculated them off of the publised speeds in the OM and the radai of the tires from firestones web site. They would also be zero wheel slip. Not perfect, but gave me an idea. The speeds are in stock rpm, with lines for the 16.9 & 18.4s for 115% and 120% of stock rpm.

Size 1st 2nd 3rd 4th

13.6 - 38 2.70 3.90 4.50 6.50

15.5 - 38 2.76 3.99 4.60 6.64

14.9 - 38 2.85 4.12 4.75 6.86

16.9 - 38 2.99 4.31 4.98 7.19
115% 3.43 4.96 5.72 8.26
120% 3.58 5.17 5.97 8.62

18.4 - 34 2.85 4.12 4.75 6.86
115% 3.28 4.73 5.46 7.89
120% 3.42 4.94 5.70 8.23

18.4 - 38 3.09 4.46 5.15 7.44
115% 3.55 5.13 5.92 8.55
120% 3.71 5.36 6.18 8.93

I have a friend that pulls with a UB in few pulls a year and does well. He's lightened it up (pressed wheels with holes cut), odd seat etc. The engine's redone to make 110 hp. It's fun to watch. There was also an oliver 88 there one year that outpulled his UB. The Oliver had an 1850 gas engine reworked to make 150 hp. He also had cut tires (sharpened cleats) which made his pulls unofficial.

I pulled a 49 utu in the 6000 - 6500 on 14.9's
around here there is no reason to go to heavier classes unless you have the m-5 juggs or a G crank.
I tried once to pull in 2nd and decided never again always pulled in first. I was planning to strip weight and pull in the 5500 - 6000 to stay with competitive competition. however I sold the tractor and bought a GBD to pull with and ended up selling it also. Sad to say I have been pulling for 4 years starting my fifth and always pulled with a MM, this year I will be trying my hand with a green one, I bought a 56 JD 720 LP.
