U302 running hot

I have checked all the simple stuff ,clean rad, new thermosat etc. new tight belt ,It is a lp tractor and does not leak antifreeze anywhere takes about 20 minutes pulling haywagons loaded 1/2 mile one way to start into the red on the gage yes I checked the temp with a probe its correct, could timing?? and tune cause this problem? has lots of power thanks BOB

Is the thermostat in the hose on a 302? I guess no matter where it is, sounds like hot water can't get to the thermostat so it can open. Generally on MM's one needs to drill a couple small (1/8") holes in the thermostat to allow some water movement past the thermostat so heated water can get to it.

Remove the Thermostat and run as you are now and see if that is the problem. Not all new parts operate as claimed. If Radiator capacity is ok sounds like a restriction in the warm to cool water flow.

Ok, Is it a gas 220 engine or a diesel 236?What's the history of the tractor? Doesnt matter I guess. This matters. A lot of U302's spent their life on the dirty end of a loader on Dairy Farms and Cattle Ranches mostly loading, what else but wet and dry manure, old hay,old straw, dirt, etc.I'll stick my neck out and guess your engines radiator has a restricted air flow.

rad. cap off start eng. see if you have water cirtulation if you cant see water movement water pump problems i have seem impellors broke

Bob, give us a call about your 302, we can help you with parts (which you may or may not need). We have several questions for you which are too time consuming over a keyboard, River Dale Farms, 920 295 3278, Dale and Doug.

thanks guys for the input. today I flushed the hole system . rad was flushed but looks very clean rust free colorado dry land tractor never seen a cow blew air thru petcocks on both heads and gas regulator. it cools down very quickly with a water hose or just setting I can see water cirulating when running???????

I am starting to look at the odd stuff now,, took the water pump off looks good!!!flushed the hole system every thing seems to flow correctly could it be the muffler??? runs fine with it on! plenty of power etc. timing is not set to spec. moved it to where the tractor seems to run smooth and free THIS is a propane unit so I can;t set the carb until I get the overheating problem solved I know it will overheat on the dyno!! bob

Is the Radiator clean on the outside? I mean is the vanes and tubes plugged up with old oil/dirt mixture or some other blockage which is restricting air flow thru the radiator itself? You have covered about every thing but this.Hows the block and head water jackets?

Can you see through the radiator? Take the grill off and put a trouble light behind and see if it is plugged. You should be able to see through a clean radiator. Brian(MN)

We had a 4Star in the shop in 1963 with a similar problem, except it was almost new! The problem turned out to be a casting fault in the water pump that restricted the flow but did not close it off. We chipped cast out enlarging the opening using a long thin punch up the hose passage. Were then able to run it at continuous rated power on dyno.

Thanks for all the replys! HAVE LOOKED AT EVERY THING LISTED I'am going to run a compression check again and probly pull the heads HOPE its a gasket not a CRACK! thanks BOB
