Universal Transmittion/Hydraulic Fluid Question

I'm trying to find the correct universal transmission/hydraulic fluid for my Massey 165. A friend of mine has some Pure - Flo xtreme which lists Performance Levels for Massey as ESN-MC2, 134 B, C. I do plow with this tractor, move round bales, and pile snow with the loader. Does this product provide enough protection for the transmission/hydraulics? Thanks for your help.

Hello: I've just realized my friend gave me the wrong info, those specs I listed are for John Deere. The oil lists MF as 1129 Permatran. My manual has 1129 ( no permatran) I'm assuming it will work. Thanks.

I have tried universal tractor oil in my 135 but have found that the MF oil is better. M1129(A) is the forerunner to Perma-Tran. I think the latest Perma-Tran oil is called Perma-Tran XL821 or something like that but I noticed better hydraulic performance using the MF oil.

Seems all the big mfgrs have their own name for their brand of fluid. I have been using the generic fluids for 30 years and it works for me. I look for the spec on the container that my owners/service manual says my tractor needs and that's what I use. When you think about the fact that all these tractors do the same thing with the same type of equipment...engines, hyd, trannys, etc. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that one oil/additive set can cover all the bases.

Course the last time I was in my JD store, I noticed that they guarantee their brand marked engine oil to some kind of engine life span or something like that. So who knows. When in doubt, spend the money and buy the mfgrs brand.

My 2c,
Mark

good advice:

do not go cheap on hyd/trans fluid,
engine oil or coolant.

go cheap on seat covers, shoes, clothes, etc

if you have to replace the trans/hyd system or engine because of using the wrong oil

by the time you are up and running again, the good oil cost will look cheap to you.

just do the right thing,

Not all hydraulic systems are the same. There are open center, closed center, piston pumps, vane pumps gear pumps and all kinds of other differences in tractor hyd. systems. Just like automatic transmissions and screaming Detroits, the same fluid is not recommended for all of them even though they do similar work.

Not going to drag this out. Your equipment, your money, your mindset. All those variances are still the same type of components, just doing variants of the same job.
