Update: Coons gettin garbage can

Well so far he is smarter than I am. I think he has dealt with these traps before.. Night before last(first night set)wife and I heard a commotion just outside the computer room where the trap was set...I went out to find that it appeared that the coon had tried to climb on the wooden GC lid to get in the barrell but the lid fell and hit the trap and made it close with no varmint inside..well last night I got real smart I thought-I decided to even tie the bait to the end of the trap up off of the floor of the trap..I just thought maybe if he was kinda reaching up he might get on the trigger easier/quicker..well I went out the door and I didn't even see the trap. Apparently he scooted it around to get the pieces I had thrown inside(small pcs went through the wire)..He had moved it 5-6 ft and in the process it tripped..he's smart but I will get him..I've caught smart, smart old, old, wild barn cats before..I do think I can out smart him....here is the plan...Trap will be moved off of the concrete and anchored to the ground--everything else has seemed o.k. but he is scooting it around and as a result the trap trips..Little more time will tell..BTW, no more scattered garbage since tieing the can to the house...I'm just trying to get him 'cause guy I work with wants to grill him..He loves em--thankfully I have never been that hungry..

What worked for me was covering the top, sides and back of the trap with 1/4" plywood - That way he can access the food only through the trap door.

Put about 1/2 cup of Golden link_disallowed flybait in a disposable bowl, add about 1 to 2 cups of Coke or other SWEET soft drink, and place it where Mr. Coon is sure to find it. The next morning you will find Mr. Coon resting peacefully within 10 to 20 feet of the "treat". Works for possums also.

We feed cats outside on our back porch on a table and the coons up on the table snarl and snap at you when you come out the back door. I stake the big Havahart trap to the ground nearby set over a handfull of dry cat food. They go in and reach down through the wire with their front paws to collect the cat food and ALWAYS set the trap off. Wish I had someone around here who would eat them...

I basically do the same thing but make sure it's anchored to the ground. I use a can of sardines under the trap (just scratch out a hole in the dirt) so it's pretty much impossible to get to it except from inside.
Yea I catch an occasional cat but I hate them about as bad as coons. If the neighbors won't feed 'em, I will.
I like the flybait idea too.

I got rid of the raccoons here by not leaving anything where they could get to it. No food no raccoons. Just like the two legged freeloaaders, no free meal and they move on.

When we set the live trap we have we use part of one of those TV dinner trays. Cut one of the smaller sections off and then use a twist tie and a couple holes in the bottom of it so as to tie it down in the back of the cage and in the center. They can not reach the food that way and have to come in. We also drive a couple of piece of re-bar into the ground in the back area of the cage so the animal can not move the cage around

My Inlaws bring their own food :(

If I don"t get him tonight I"m not going to mess with him any more..laid down a plastic 55 gallon drum, set and inserted trap, tied barrel to trailer tongue, tied food/bait can to the back wall..I see no way to miss..a little more time will tell..

Caught the neighbor"s cat before I went to bed last night..Turned him loose and didn"t even re-set it..Gotta go out and be sure my can chained to the wall is still working--If it is I"m done trapping..

Wow the coons here in Indiana must not be as smart as those where you live. I just set the traps and throw in a little cat or dog food. Always either catch something or not but never have had a false trip. joe

My 'catch em alive' trap came from Tractor Supply and has small mesh at the bait end so critters cant reach through from the outside. I put my catfood bait in one of those magnetic parts dishes you get at the parts store and put it all the way to the back of the cage. Then I send mister coon or possum to visit the baby jesus. It amazes me how many are out there. I think about what the local population would be if I wasn't doing my part!

use large marshmellows.tie the garbage can lid shut, set trap and lay a couple of marshmellows out front and two or three inside at the back.Coon cuffs will get them when nothing else will if you put a marshmellow below trigger.Or you can simply dig a hole deep enough for a leg hold trap(1.5 double coil is what i use,but a single long spring will hold most) to lay in and close, cover it with a piece of plywood with a 1 1/2 " hole over the pan. wire a marsmellow to the pan, cover it with plywood and the throw some dirt around edges.lay a couple of marshmellows on top where he can see them. They love marshmellows.i think they think they are eggs to start with, then they taste them and since they have a sweet tooth like a bear they cant resist .A cat, dog, skunk or something wont stick their hand down in hole to get bait so its almost a coon specific set.
