Yes that's where it goes. It will discolor very shortly. I know you can not find any espestous (not spelled right) these days, but if you could find something similar and attach it to the inside of the hood out of sight it would help. Another thought is to make a heat shield fastened to the muffler clamp, form it to be between the muffler and the hood. There needs to be air space between the shield and the muffler, and the shield and the hood. Keep it low enough so it doesn't show a lot. I have seen tractors at shows where the decal was placed down below the lovers on the hood skirt. But it doesn't look right.

Delbert, isnt there a reference page on Minneapolis Moline dot com to where the decals go? Wasnt it the 1950 models and after that have the (MM)Minneapolis-Moline on the hood with the "U" following it and then nothing on the fuel tank? I know most of the earlier Us just had an MM on the fuel tank.

you could wrap the exhaust with this...

It works well. I used it on my U, and the paint
shows no heat damage even after pulling and
plowing with it for several years.

Here's a scan of front of parts book. Minneapolis-Moline U above curtain louvers on both sides.

U follows Moline on both sides..U is to front on belt pulley side and to the rear on distributor side.

Tony, your tractor is a real"looker". Absoluty fantastic. Better than when it left the Lake Street plant.
Here is what I have done on with the decal on a few "U s": I cut the part of the decal that is next to the muffler, just left a gap in it . I know it is not correct , but didn t look much worse that the discoloring from the heat.
About using asbestos paper, If you need some there is a roll of it here!. Not sure how it could be sent to you? clint

Tony, Design Engineering,Inc. WWW.DesignEngineering.com offers two products that I have used on my tractors made exactly for what you are attempting to do. One is a product named "cool Tape" made in several widths that is self adhesive heat reflective tape. I have used it on the underside of the hood to keep the heat from discoloring the paint . Works well, can be cut with scissors to fit around the muffler hole and comes in a long enough roll so you can do the length of the hood in one piece. The other product I've used is their "Header Wrap". I have wrapped the pipe that your muffler fastens to and secured it with stainless hose clamps. If you ever need to remove the wrap, just loosen the hose clamps. Works for me and the paint has not discolored. Good luck, If you need any information, just call !! --Dean--

Helix Racing sells a heat shield that has adhesive on one side and is flexable. I bought a sheet, and strip of it to put under the hood, and on the side panel on my UB I am just finishing. I will put the sheet under the hood where the exhaust pipe goes through, and the strips in the side panel close the the manifold. Helix makes this product for motorcycles with bodywork close to the exhaust to prevent it from melting. They were very helpful when I told them it was for a tractor.

Thank you ! for responses and especially IHMMJD for the pictures I needed to see how others looked and delt with it.
I think the propane hood is shaped more rounded.
Although my muffler hole is oblong but did not look like it was tampered with.
