Ok, went ahead and pulled head off the Ford 172 engine, got tried of meshing around. Looks like it was good thing I pulled head as you can see by picture. Funny thing there was no indication of any problem with the head. No water in oil or exhaust, never run anywhere close to being hot.. Curious situation, never seen a head crack like this one..hhmmmm.

This was a rebuilt head(less than 200 hrs on engine)

yeppers, on lot of deposit for 200 hrs in #2 cylinder, and that is the one that the spark plug broke off in. I think it bares further investicating as to why!! even has more deposit on top of #2 piston than the other 3...hhhmmm

Keith, that carbon build-up kinda explains the stuck plug. Don't know about the Ford tractors for sure, but the Ford FE V-8s had a tendency to do the same thing because there was actually a portion of the threaded part of the plug that extended into the combustion chamber and would get a build-up on it.I never did strip any threads or twist off any plugs, but some of them could be a real bear to get out.

That looks like carbon built up from burning oil better pull the piston too and see what the oil ring looks like.

Boy don't know Walt about all this extra "chores" ya trying to get me to do..:>)

Now I see how you guys are, just trying to create more and more work. Can't let me sulk or procrastinate...:>((

All joking aside, I think that is something that will need to be done...durn it

Yeppers Andy, I just had to poke a little fun at Walt and the others. Gotta keep things a little on the smilley side..as this job started out as a simple tune-up and ended up braeking sparkplug off in head. Then after removing head found that crack in the water jacket...hhhmmmm

Walt only lives a few hundred miles west of me, will be checking in on his tractors hopefully in July. Will definiently do it at time of IH show in Brooks, OR.
