v8 Conversion

I am thinking about starting a v8 conversion for a farmall tractor this year if i can get the stuff. now. i understand u have to make ur own template and such. but. what do i need to do for clutch wise??. anyone who has done a v8 conversion around Greene, ia let me know, i would like to get in contact with ya and see how its done.

There are a lot of Farmall V8 conversions out there.Mostly Ms. Lots of them on Utube.Most use the original tractor
flywheel/clutch and make some kind of spacer/adapter to put on motor. I myself am doing a M/GMC 305 V6 'conversion',and need some
advise/help too. Steve

I would not use the stock M flywheel on V8 but find a steel flywheel and balanced clutch that will take the higher RPM of the V8.

I would also not recommend the stock flywheel if your going to rev it up. Stockers over 3000 rpms are like grenades.

Big Farmalls have between 300 and 425 cubic inches. M Farmalls between about 250 and 285 CID. (I know these are not decimal place figures) So, the issue is figuring how to build a tractor that has either a low speed cam with small overlap and great bottom end, or a speed reduction gearbox to allow a modest V8 to spin faster such as 1.5:1 or 2:1. As noted below, use a Flywheel designed for the engine. Clutch disks can be found with the correct splines. The pilot bearing can also be fabricated to fit. A most critical factor is the alignment of the output of the engine to the input of the trans. .001 to .002" concentricity is reasonable. Jim

Grunt will be your stumbling block. You will have to
have her wound up twice what the M was to get
your power band. That makes for some talk gears.

Not that I mean to change your mind, but an old
straight six out of a grain truck had skads of low end
power.

I think a V8 is probably the most unwise conversion for a tractor that is going to be used and not just played with. I would find an older cummins diesel or a 6 cylinder out of an older truck.

I always was intrigued by a fella on YouTube and his conversion... Took a 7.3 International Diesel and mounted it into a M. Man did he do a beautiful job, and if I were to ever buy just a parts tractor, this would be something I would like to do (purely for shows). It would be an expensive project, I'm sure... But it would be the talk of the town!

I was in high school when a stock flywheel exploded at the IL State Fair in Springfield. Use the V-8 flywheel.

As well I have a parts 460 that I am thinking about doing something with...maybe a 392 gas or something along those lines...but got finish the other two 460s I have...might not be anything left of it.
