VAC Operating Temperature

I just replaced my temperature gauge and found that it reads about 200 degrees during light duty operation on a 90 degree day. What would be normal? My old gauge never worked properly and never read above 110 degrees.

The parts manual specifies a 148-153 degree thermostat for gas VACs Low cost fuel had a 180. 200 may be a bit warm but the radiator is 50 years old and probably partly pugged as well as rust/crud in the block. As long as you don't boil off your water (unpressurized system) probably not going to kill it. Would hurt to try a flushing job ans see if it cools a bit better.

My 53 VAI runs between 160 on cool days to 180 on 90 degree days. I mow tall fields using a 5 foot brush hog. 200 is a bit warm, try cleaning the radiator, then check the thermostat. If your wife doesn't mind you using her kitchen utensils (or even if she does), put the thermostat in a pot of water and heat it until it begins to open. Check the temperature on the thermometer to see if it is opening at the proper temp. Replace if needed. Good Luck.

Mine never had a thermostat in it. temp never moved. replaced the gauge, same thing. installed a thermostat and now it never gets over 160 running a 60" belly mower thru tall grass.
