Valve spring question ??

I have a spring with a 1 7/16 " diameter The valve spring retainer is 1 3/8 .The spring would slightly stick out from under the retainer . So run it or get a bigger retainer? What do the tailers say ?

What is the inside diameter of the spring or the wire diameter of the spring?

It would be the wrong spring for the engine. I would think the spring pressure could be wrong would affect how the spring would function. Too weak and the valve would leak or too strong and it would add additional wear on the camshaft.

That sounds normal to me. Its the inside of the valve spring that needs to fit the retainer properly.

Wrong spring or wrong retainer, they should match. I agree with Stephan. If the spring and retainer do not match, it can put unequal pressure on the valve stem.

Well Isky sold me a set of springs with no retainer set so i have no choice but to purchase separately

I am sure Isky will have the correct retainers if they sold you the springs. O.D. of the retainer will be smaller than the spring O.D. That is how it is supposed to be!! Like I said the fit of the ID which usually has two steps is the part that has to fit correctly.

Call Isky they will give you the correct advice. Incorrect matching of valve train components in a high-performance application will result in a failure. Sounds like big block springs and small block retainer.

Then talk to the ones who sold you the retainers. You may have to break out a larger bill for performance parts.

Not a good idea. Will bind it up stem cause premature wear on the guide .

Valve train coming apart can cause catastrophic engine failer. In other words BOOM.

Beehive, ovate wire springs are now over 50 years old. Even OEM manufacturers have been using them for 30 years. GM has installed numerous versions, heights, and rates in stock engines since at least 1993, and provided a warranty.

Have Iskendarian provide the spring specifications and buy proper springs somewhere else. Comp, Howards, and other non-Asian suppliers are old hands at this.

That’s a pretty good fit as 3/8 is 6/16’s so only 1/32 sticking out one each side. The more important fit is how the retainers inside step fits into the spring as this keeps the spring from walking around on the retainer
If you knew what steel retainer Isky recommended the company that makes the titanium retainers can use those specs to get you the correct titanium retainers

Must be planning to crank some pretty high rpm or looking for a couple of hp in a limited modification class

Well, I have to seriously take issue with that one. You seem to be blaming Isky for your problems- I'm not buying it. In addition to using their springs since the 70's, and having about a dozen sets in my clean room right now, and a set of their 8005-A's on the 427 in my Galaxie that are 20 yrs old and still holding pressure. I actually was lucky enough to meet Ed Iskenderian in person at the California Hot Rod Reunion about 10 years ago, introduced by my buddy who went way back with Ed. My bud used to have a '63 Galaxie with a 427 that ran 8.70 ETs. We run a .950 lift solid roller cam in our 672 ci pulling truck, so I'm a little versed in this stuff. I'll assume you asked Isky for springs for a 354, spec'd by the cam and intended usage, which you got. For some reason you think you need titanium retainers for this "high perf motor". Who chose the retainers that you had to "purchase separately"? You'll have a really hard time convincing me that you need titanium retainers for an old chuffer like a 354, and that Isky's excellent steel retainers that you could have purchased as a kit with your springs would not suffice- but to blame Isky when the retainers you chose don't match their springs isn't cool. Just the idea that you would come on an antique tractor site for advice on your "high perf motor" is a little suspect
