valves in Z

I tore my Z apart and took the jugs to a friend to check the valves. Told him to check and see if they could just be lapped back in?? He says that they are wore too badly. Will valves out of an R motor work?? Also someone told me that chevy valves would work, if so what size engine. really hate to buy new valves for a tractor that get used 5-10 hours a year.
Thanks for a great forum

We just use regular 350 chev exhaust valves. Use the ones from a car engine not a truck the stems are a different size.

Why not just go to external_link.com and get the right ones that you dont have to modify and make work. They are about the same price.

We got started using Chevy valves when the AGCO parts were $17+ each.

The last Chevy 350 small block exhaust valves I got were about $5,00 each. I just asked for exhaust valves for a 305 or 5 liter small block in a '1984 GMC pickup.

Yes, I did have to cut them down some. I don't remember having to cut them very much at all for the Z blocks. Probably because those engines need a lot of grinding on the valve seats to get them in shape anyway. They had to be cut much more to work in the overhead valve 206 engines.

I don't understand the guy's comment about stem diameters, as far as I know, Chevy used the same valve diameter in their small blocks from the '50s up through the '80s.

I used Chevy valves in mine, but it's just the exhausst valves used in both places, not the intake. Shop that installed had Used ones that he sold me for $3 each. Not sure if he shortened ends or not to fit, doesn't seem like it. You can even use the Chevy spring caps and retainers then too.
