Vane v/s Gear pump

High pressure use the gear. High flow use the vane. In between use either, but if possible I would go with a gear pump.

Vane should be more efficient.
Gear pump cheaper, simpler, higher pressures and more abuse resistant. They are heat producing power hogs however.

I would match what was on it originally. Gear pumps are cheaper. Vane pumps can match any gear pump for pressure and flow if you want to spend the money. Make sure you don't put on a new one bigger than the old one or the suction line will be too small and cause more problems.

Gear pumps are more dirt tolerant.....Also cheaper usually. I have seen vane pumps go to 2500 psi too by the way.

Most vane pumps are balanced pressure types and all gear pumps are not balanced pressure.
Vane pumps have 2 kidney ports for pressure output and 2 kidney ports for inlet, Gear pumps usually only have one of each.

Most vane pumps are self-adjusting and take up for wear because most have spring loaded vanes that expand as housings wear or do so by centrifugal force.

All rotary fuel injection pumps have built in vane pumps and they virtually last forever. An injection pump IS a hydraulic pump, just a bit fancier and has to pump thinner oil.

Gear pumps have no self-adjust feature. Once worn, they go in the scrap heap.

That being said, gear pumps tend to be cheaper and last a long time with good oil.
