Vented Gas Caps

Recently noticed that my '57 860's gas cap doesn't seem to be venting properly, as the tank has been building up pressure. Figure it's time for a new cap. Original Part # is NAA 9030D. New number from NH seems to be D5NN9030A. I just wanted to verify that this was a vented cap.

Thanks!

Greg

I don't know if they still are but Ford was exchanging old caps for new vented caps. I think New Holland was conytinuing that for awhile. They had lost a lawsuit.

Never, never open a fuel tank that sits on top of
the motor under a hood while the tractor is Hot! I
speak from experience. Lucky to be here . . .

Funny this comes up as a topic tonight. I just blew the bottom valve seal out of the 860. I was out plowing and brought the 860 back to the shed spewing gas out of the bottom of the tank. I took off the cap and Woooosh, I was lucky as it did not ignite. Looks like I got to get a new cap and pull the tank and reseal the valve on the bottom. I pumped out most of the gas from the tank so it wouldn"t pee all over the floor.

As usual there is no new problems with this tractor, just new problems to me.

I think a lot of the problems with the 860 gas boiling is due to the gas line running behind the manifold and the gas now boiling at a lower temperature due to the ethanol. I moved my line and it helped a great deal. I also switched to no ethanol gas and so far no boiling. This also causes a vapor lock condition which causes the engine to miss. If you have these symtons consider moving the gas line.

That seems to be the right number for your hundred series.

I replaced the gas engine 671 fuel cap with a new vented type about five years ago. The cap from the dealer 20 miles away wouldn't fit because it was for a diesel, or at least that was what I was told when taking it back.

Diesels weren't available until the x01 series but it might be worth double-checking when ordering.

I went a greater distance the other direction to a long-established third or fourth generation Ford/NH dealer to get the right cap.

The young family member parts woman said the NH free replacement cap program was no longer in effect. I tend to believe her because, prior to that, she got all the o-rings and a few small parts for an SOS right the first time.

I think the cap cost about $40. The cap's rubber gasket has a couple dozen radial cracks.

Several years ago, the dealer gave me one of those caps like you have pictured, under the free replacement program. It worked fine until it got all rusty and when I showed it to another dealer, he said it was for a diesel.
