I have a small work area approxamently 8'x18'x8' high, I'm thinking about a wall mount ventless propane heater, I'm concerened about any gas fumes that is breathing the fumes is this anything to be concerend about?

Besides not being good for you, the heater will produce LOTS of water vapor which can lead to mild and/or rusting of tools, etc..

What not use a vented heater?

I have one and like it just fine. I haven't had any problems with fumes. That is why they call it ventless, it doesn't need to be vented.

The heater should be fine. I"d recommend the infrared kind. You won"t need a big one for that small area. These heaters are equipped to shut off if the oxygen level gets to low. They will produce moisture though.

Have had one for years in my 34 ft. motor home works good, most of the time to good have to open windows gets to warm.

When I built my house in 1992(in NY state) they were illegal for living quarters. The law has since changed to allow it!
Last year I built an approx. 12'x12'x8' room in the corner of a steel building. I used foil/air bubble/foil insulation as I wanted to sandwich something between the particle board and the walls, and I hate fiberglass. I used the same remaining insulation in the two wooden walls and the ceiling. I installed a small ventless propane wall heater just to keep it above freezing. Everything in the room got sopping wet. Mold started on some spots on the walls. I have an electric heater in there now. If I ever get the building totally enclosed and need some heat in the rest of it, I'll open the walk through door and fire up the propane.

I put one in our basement that looks like a fire place and we love it. I can"t believe how well it heats the basement and the rest of the house with heat riseing.

I do crack one of the basement windows open for fresh air just to be safe. It does in the instructions suggest that there be some sort of fresh air when installing it.

I piped it with 1/2 copper because it had to snake threw the celing and around furnace ducts, i did put "2" shut off just in case of a problem.

They work fine for some people, whereas other's complain about a slight smell, moisture, etc.

They are called "non vented" because they don't require dedicated venting installed. They DO require a certain square-footage of room per BTUs of heat output. Code - in most if not all places in the USA requires they only be used in buildings that already have primary heat sources - i.e. the non-vented heaters are not allowed as primary heaters.

I have several and really like them. No odor, no moisture problem, etc. Here, in the winter - with all the wood heating I do - I need all the exta moisture I can get, and is the last thing I have to worry about. I use them mostly for spot heating of areas I want warmer than other parts of my house or shop. We also have one in a small bathroom, and it too works fine.

As another poster already mentioned, the infrared seems to work better then the open-flame type. I have both versions, but the infrared will heat distant objects directly (or people) before the air is warmed up.

I have one in my shop with CO detector nearby which has never activated. I do have a means for ventilation also.

I was doing a search about these heaters and found your response. I have one of these heaters in my bathroom as well. When I was a kid, this was about the only type of heater we ever had in our bathroom. I just bought this older house and the FHA inspector was not going to sign off on the inspection until I had the old wall heater removed. Told them I wanted it left in there and I guess it was forgot about. Anyway, it is still there and I am trying to find one of the ceramic fixtures that goes above the flame. One of two in this one is broken. Or if anyone knows the proper name of these things so I could do a better search. Thanks
