Vermeer 504g

I have been pricing them lately and have seen F's for around $3000 and G's for around $3500 so that price is pretty good. They don't seem to be very numerous so I'd jump on it if it looks good. Will probably go fast the closer we get to hay season.

The Massey 1440 is a 504G in red paint, I believe. Saw one sell on ebay a while ago in that price range.

What is the condition of the Pickup? Is this electric twine tie? Is this a Super G? What is the paint condition? That baler could be worth $1,000-$4,000 depending on the baler condition. Having newer belts is a plus but a new set is only $800-900. A pickup rebuild can be $1000-$2,000. Check the chains. New chains are not that much but a worn chain will wear your sprockets and gears out.

Hay Dr,

What kind of options should I be looking for on a used 504G? My tractor is 35hp and has one hydraulic outlet (DA).

The hay pick up header on this baler has a lot of grease fittings that tend to get neglected because they are kind of hard to reach. Maintenance or lack of is harder on these balers than the actual amount of bales made, I think. I just had to buy 5 of the header parts that run in the cam track, never seen the grease gun.

ordel1,

Now that you have been thru the rework, would you now reconsider the purchase of this model, or just look a bit harder at the specific unit?

I am glad I got this baler back in Nov. and have the time to get it right before hay season. I am going to have about 1,000 in labor and parts . They had to straighten the backer plate, and straighten the shaft that the drum roller turns on. That shaft usually gets bent at the same time the backer plate bends. I need 5 of the eccentric that go in the cam track and the bearings and bushings. all that so far is 700.00. Another 300.00 is going into the rubber mounted pick up teeth. So if I have 1,000.00 in all that and the rest of the baler is Ok , I will be happy. Belts look OK and It looks to have most all the orginal bearings in it so i will have some extras on hand and be watching to make sure they are not get hot and wanting to catch on fire. I really like this model as I can use it with my Ford 4610 about 52 hp. And this model makes a good tight heavy bale wich means more hay under roof.. I need about 150 bales made every year. So a used economical baler is all that I can afford.
