VH4D Repair Questions

I managed to damage the #4 con-rod bearing and the crank (my own fault - low on oil and tilted "downhill" in the Bobcat). The bearing didn't spin, but it overheated and badly scuffed the crankshaft journal pin.

Now, I need to remove the crank for a regrind and have a few questions for anyone who"s been inside this engine before. Trying to limit my work to what's needed...

1. Can the crankshaft be removed without pulling the cylinder heads and removing the pistons/con rod assemblies?

2. Does the oil pump have to be removed to remove the crankshaft?

3. Does the crankshaft helical gear on the flywheel end need to be removed in order to remove crankshaft from block? If so, how is it removed?

4. Are there any other items that MUST be removed to get the crank out?

5. How to remove/inspect/test oil jet nozzles?

Thanks for the advice and help.

If its just one throw on the crank then they can often be repaired without removeal. There is a special tool to do the job and you use the starter to spin the engine.

Larry,

Thanks for the tip. Can you point me in the direction of what I need to look for? An in-block repair is definitely preferred.

It is only the #4 pin that is damaged.

If the alternatives are transporting a 400# engine or pulling the crank and taking either to the same place, Ill just go with pulling the crank.

Still would like to get answers to my original questions.

Thanks.

1. Can the crankshaft be removed without pulling the cylinder heads and removing the pistons/con rod assemblies?

Basicaly No, you have to remove con rods, however, I believe it is possible to pull cylinders complete with heads and pistons but have never done this and would take the oportunity to do valve seats etc while engine is striped down.

2. Does the oil pump have to be removed to remove the crankshaft?

Can"t remember the lubrication system on this engine.

3. Does the crankshaft helical gear on the flywheel end need to be removed in order to remove crankshaft from block? If so, how is it removed?

No the gear will pass through the bearing hole.

4. Are there any other items that MUST be removed to get the crank out?

Only the obvious like sump and rear baring plate etc. ;-)

5. How to remove/inspect/test oil jet nozzles?

When apart it should be easy to apply air to the oil galleries and check for air blowing through.

Good luck

Answering my own questions after chatting with the rebuilder who originally did this engine.

1. No. The con rod bots would interfere.

2. Yes, otherwise the #1 rod bolts are extremely inaccessible.

3. no.

4. no.

5. Clean with a toothpick, check for flow by pumpin air or oil through the removed pump's port.

Crank is out and ready to go to the shop today.
