voltage regulator testing

I need to check my voltage regulator on my massey 65. I have had the generator rebuilt but the battery still won't stay charged. I have searched the archives for testing my voltage regulator but got really confused. Can someone out there explain how to test a voltage regulator in layman's terms?

Check the charging voltage at the battery after the tractor has run for a while @ above idle speed.

"6-Volt" system should be charging @ about 7 to 7.4Volts.

"12-Volt" system should be charging at about double those numbers.

What is your's putting out?

as you increase rpm's, does the amp meter needle move over to the plus side.

when you turn on light does it go to the minus side, then go plus when you increase rpm's

If so its working,

Then take battery off, be sure its charged up and have it load tested.

can have a bad plate in battery and it will give you a fit trying to fix your charging system that not broken.

Start the tractor and let it run for a few minutes, then put it at a high idle. Have an assistant look at the ammeter while you MOMENTARILY ground the field terminal to the engine with a piece of wire. The field is the one which comes off the side of the generator. If the ammeter pegs to charge, your generator and regulator ok. If not, and your generator is known good, it's gotta be the regulator.

I just went through this on my 65. Come to find out there was a hairline crack on the field terminal connector coming out of the Genny which wasn't visible. Didn't find it until I checked every possible item with an ohm meter.

Drove me nuts for a while.
