Volunteer RR corn.. again

If any of ya remeber my posting the other week about worrying about volunteer RR corn coming up in the feild I plan on putting corn( because last years crop was disc down), Some one had mentioned I should replant RR corn, and cultivate. Well, I guess I could do that, hopefully we have sufficient moisture. Does any one see any problems doing it this way. I had all the seed bought, Liberty seem like seed is getting short supply and is pretty pricey. I hate to do it, but if I plowed the entire feild under would it place the old corn deep enough that it would not grow? Finally, with the price of corn topping $6, and reports that it may soar to $10, does any one think that people may just decide to reverse the trend and bite the inputs and make a surprise turnaround on the number of corn acres planted this year?

Oh yeah the numbers will go back and forth 5 times between now and harvest between beans and corn.

Thats why I plant about 50/50 corn and beans to cover both sides.

I never found plowing would bury all cobs deep enough to keep them from sprouting. I think less sprouts left on the surface without tillage.

I don't know if these hybrids are still available, but perhaps you could get some ALS resistant corn, or barring that, run a hooded sprayer through your field and spray some Poast on it. Down here in the South, we are relearning how to manage corn so I'm probably no big help. Biggest fear is that you will have problems with poor yields should you have much corn come up in the row that can't be managed and come back to haunt you.

Spring plowing in Minnesota is a bad idea..... I would not do that.

It will not burry the ears deep enough anyhow.

Rather than plow, field cultivate (or disk), wait for a rain & regrowth, then field cultivate (or disk) again. This was the old way of lowering weed pressure before sprays were around.

It puts your corn a week or 2 behind, but it does not dry out, clod up, & wreck your ground as bad as spring plowing would do - and you still would be waiting the same anount of time to get the plow ground in shape....

Cultivating would help, but it won't be perfect. Hit it early if you cultivate, it does not pay to wait & then try to cultivate....

Too bad no cattle were put on it for a week or 2 or all winter, that woulda taken care of the problem.

I could be wrong, but I was told that Liberty would kill RR corn and Roundup would kill Liberty corn. I use Liberty link corn and RR beans. That's why I don't use RR corn. Chris
