Wagner Tractor

May be able to get a hold of a early Wagner tractor. I'm guessing by the pictures it's possibly a WA-14, but can't tell for sure. Weren't these made for John Deere? It has John Deere Decals but doesn't look like one for sure. It has a cab. Anyone know of anything to look for to determine the authenticity besides the serial number plate? Anyone know where the serial plate would be? Thanks in advance - Bob

I can't help a whole lot but Yes they were made for deere. There was a WA-14 and WA-17. I am thinking that I read somewhere that there were more 17's made than 14's. I don't know that to be a fact though.

JD bought out Wagner production in 1969 but Wagner had been making tractors since the mid 50s. The WA-14 came out in the early 60s. So what are you looking at? A JD Wagner or just a Wagner?

Not sure. It is a WA-14. It has a 250 cummins and a 10 speed road ranger transmission. It has John Deere on each side of the hood, but don't know if that is original. I'll try to find out a little more. Thanks - Bob

Here is a picture of it.

Only way to tell for sure is there will be two serial number plates. One Wagner put on and a smaller one JD put on themselves.

Give Travis Jorde in Rochester, Minnesota a call. He has one and is very familiar with them and I am sure he can help you out a lot.

Its most likely just a Wagner then. When JD took over the hood was redone to match the New Generation tractors. You can kind of see it in the picture.

The Jan/Feb Two/Cyl mag 2008 had a 15 page article on the Walker WA-17 & WA-14 there agreement with JD lasted 3 years startng in 1969 thru the end of 1971.Only32 WA-14s and 28 WA-17 had been sold. They actually were made like Steiger and Vesatile with truck components .My guess by your pictures it is probably a Wagner built prior to their partnership with JD.As for value certainly rare just have to find right buyer mainly due to their size

That deal put Wagner out of business didn't it? Wasn't there some exclusivity contract there so Wagner couldn't build anymore after the 8010 came out or something?

The deal kept Wagner from making more tractors for 5 years but it didn't put them out of business. Wagner made mining and forestry equipment and the 4 wheel drive tractors were just a very small part of their business. The anti JD crowd like to bash JD for putting Wagner out of business. But the fact is in my opinion, Wagner wanted to get out of the business. The market for their tractors were limited and their tractors were expensive to buy. The list price for a WA-17 was $50,000 or more. How many 4020s would that buy you? Also, their current series which JD bought had been on the market since around 1960. You had Versatile coming on strong and Steiger moving to Fargo both companies starting to build 2nd generation designs. Combine a lack luster market with an aging series of tractors and throw into that mix newer designs coming on the market for others, in my opinion, Wagner signed the deal with JD just to give their tractor one last send off. The idea probably looked good to Wagner considering JD had a huge dealer network to sell them through but. But JD only sold around 60 of them. If JD wouldn't have bought out Wagner production they would have just fizzled out anyway.
Wagner

sorry Bob but that is just a plain wagner in JD paint colors and decals. the original JD wagners had a genuine JD serial number tag and different grill, hood and front bumper area.
still a good find but in my opinion at least half the price of a genuine JD wagner.

Less then that. The last WA-14 I watched sell went for $5,000. Nothing wrong with it just them Wagners are dinosaurs.

Can you share where this old brute is? I am always interested in learning the locations of Wagners and talking to anybody that has/d one or has any old Wagner literature. Thanks
