Water in Oil.

I have a 1947 Farmall H. Pulled the drain plug to change the oil. Quite a bit of water came out. Other than the head gasket, where else could it be coming from?

If the pipe is loose in the exhaust manifold and it sits outside in the rain, the rain water will run right into the engine.

What's in the radiator? Water or coolant?

If you've got a water/antifreeze mix in your radiator as you should, and pure water came out of the oil pan, then it didn't come from the cooling system.

It could also be condensation from setting .

I had similar issue with a 300 Utility. One of the posters on here suggested looking at the gap between the governor and the engine block. The gap here between the two is pretty tight and like he did I also found mine lodged full of chaff and dirt etc. Then rain water is dammed up between the governor housing and block and it follows the throttle setting shaft into the governor housing where it hen drains into the crankcase. I used a seal pick and cleaned it out until I could pull a piece of electric fence wire between then like dental floss between teeth. What I found was packed in there pretty tight and took some effort to get it cleaned out. I have not had any more water I the oil, but it hasn't been outside much either. Hope this helps. Jim

If it's clear pure water it's condesate. Common in engines that sit. especially outside. No worries,just drain and go. If it's green,then that's antifreeze. "Houston,we have a problem".

if rain goes in thru exhaust you can bet valves will have a problem

If you have water in the radiator one other possibility is one or more leaking sleeves.

do you cover the exhaust pipe when tractor is sitting? is it in a shed? nice to know these things. WHERE ELSE COULD IT BE COMING FROM... THE SKI WOULD BE MY ANSWER.

I'm assuming he means coolant drained out the oil pan. People use the word water for coolant. If so, other than head gasket. My Dad's 47 H was having coolant in the oil. Spoke to Pete23, he suggested 1 of the steel shelves that goes thru the cylinder head is cracked as the head gasket looked okay. Cylinder head was checked out, sure 1 of those steel sleeves was cracked. Been good for couple years now.

Solved the same problem on my IH 140 by replacing the head gasket.
