water injection

I had heard about using water injection systems in diesels. I was at a tractor pull this past weekend and they had a few tractors with these kits. I am new to the tractor pulling world and I would like to know more about water injection. Can anyone tell me a little more about this topic? Thanks for any info.

I have a good friend who pull hot farm and i have been to the dyno with him and learn a little. I think it has a couple porposes but the main reason is to cool the piston because of the compresson and high cylinder temps. I believe the run around 1200- 1300 degrees. If im wrong i hope some one corrects me because im no expert. Hope this awnsers your question.

Im no expert either but yes, main idea is keep pistons from melting, 1300°F is on the jagged edge of death. Methanol is typically mixed with the water (washer fluid) some claim at that pressure/temp you're getting oxygen for combustion from both the methanol and water, but im no chemist...

Cooling is main goal. In Super Stock Diesels with 3 stages of boost you get a resulting spike in heat and pressure at each stage. 250psi is not uncommon. Air charge is cooled and increases oxygen density on top of keeping top end temps down.
Windshield washer fluid is a common water injection additive and the chemistry available now has dictated water and fuel testing as the norm in some classes, as the water system is another potential point of entry for oxygen in some form into engine.
The Simpson injection system is most common one used as it is boost dependent in its' activation. Alcohol tractors run water too to kill detonation as some are prone to leaning out.

Don't spray into the turbine wheel inlet . Erodes the blades and adds load to the turbo to pump that weight of water. Thermally more efficient to add water for cooling after compression instead of prior.
It's all about keeping metal temps below failure levels. Some jet engines also use water injection during max power . Eg the B52 during takeoff.
I keep wondering why the B52 keeps using those p.o.s J57 engines. P&W makes some very quiet, very fuel efficient 40,000-50,000lb thrust turbo fans. They would pay for themselves in fuel savings and fewer air to air refuelling events , longer range, short take off roll etc.

look up snow performance on youtube and they explain everything including washing fluid. i have a snow setup 2 outlets after the turbo in the tube going to the intake. mine is set up on boost preasure and everything is automatic. kits are $544 plus shipping to you i have an extra one.i can save you the shipping and i would use the boost juice they supply 51%water 49% methenol
