Help: Need help from the forum, I put the water in my 1940 B it was leaking from one push rod tube and also from the crankcase does this spell big trouble, I did not replace the tubes in the head. How do I get the tubes out of the head and how do they seal at each end of the head? Do I need to pull the head off to replace them. or is there bigger trouble?

1st off don't run it.

Sounds like a tube failed (which happens). Supposedly you can take them out with the head on, but I don't know how much work it is. Might be easier to pull it. Tubes come from ma deere.

Water in crankcase could be from the tubes and it just flows in there. I would solve the tube problem first.

I was reading the JD-4 manual it says I can pull the tubes with the head bolted on using a O.T.C puller I do not know what that is. can anyone explain what it is or another method of pulling them.

The B service manual SM 2004 has a section on how to change out the tubes with the head on. The tubes are tapered or stepped, and they go in from the top of the head. You have to use a special puller, and when you put them back in, they are supposed to be swaged at the ends.

Personally, I would not try to change them with the head on, because I think the chance that they would still leak when you were done is high. I think you can do a better job with the head off. Also, I am not sure where you would find the special puller. When we did the head on my B, we drove the tubes out from the back.

Anyway, you might try to get a copy of the service manual so you can see for yourself.

A method for pulling the tubes is to tap them, then using a long bolt w/some oversize nuts under a nut that fits the bolt, "jack" them out w/ the nut on the bolt.
Use some penetrating lock tite when you reassemble, and you should have no problems.
