WAY OT/ Coffee?

OK, I need opions, advice, and hard facts. I have been a coffee drinker for the past 10 years. I am now 26 years old. The only other things I drink are water, a glass of OJ in the morning with breakfast, and I like to enjoy 1-3 glasses of white wine in the evening, but not every evening. About six months ago I decided I was going to try to be more healthy. I dropped the coffee cold turkey and didn't drink a drop for about 5 months. Now, I have fallen of the wagon and have been drinking a little in the mornings, not every morning. Some days I'll drink a little in the afternoon also, and once in a while if I am working late at the office I'll drink a little then to. What I am wanting to know is, how bad is coffee for you health wise? What aspects of health does it affect? What does it do to lifespan. I haven't had any today and I am going to try not to have any. I just can't decide if I need to cut it completly off or not? Thanks for any advice.

Luke, I am not a health nut so you know where I am coming from. A lot of coffee and tea is not good for men's health, especially the prostrate gland. At your age it isn't a problem but as you age it can be. We associate prostrate problems with older men but that is a falacy, any age man can have prostrate issues. You can have a coffee in moderation, like one in the morning and again in the afternoon. You need to force yourself to drink more water. Soda doesn't sub for water as one can of soda a day is equivalent to eating 1 pound of sugar a week. If you play sports you need to consume water during and after that kind of exercise. You have asked a good question and I think the answer is "Moderation"

I would guess that I have read/heard about about a half dozen studies in the last couple of years that suggest that coffee is actually good for you.

If I recall, I think a lot of them had to do with preventing various cancers due to high antioxidant content and organic chemicals that bind with toxins and make them less available to be taken up into your body.

Do an internet search, I'll bet you can find a web site easily that gives pro's and con's.

BTW I like my coffee black, strong and rich. Give me a large Starbucks and I am good for the day. (though I usually brew my own because I don'e want to spend $2 + a day on coffee).

Doctor told me once thaty coffee was good for me . It helps the kidneys working . How true that is . I drink a cup of coffe & pee three . I was always told it will stunt my growth . I'm 5'6" & 62 yrs old so I don't worry about my growth anymore . God bless, Ken

You're going to get a thousand opinions on this one! Other than the caffeine, I don't think it hurts you. I say enjoy your life. If the coffee doesn't kill you, something else will! My grandpa drank coffee like there was no tomorrow. It finally got him...............at 93. Kinda reminds me of one time I told my brother, "You know, if I didn't drink coffee, beer, smoke a little, and chase the girls, I might actually have a little money". He looked at me sort of funny and said,"To do WHAT with"?

As I sit here reading this, drinking my Cappuccino (French Vanilla) with a double dose of Dark chocolate in it. I only hope that its good for me because I love it. Never heard of anyone dieing from an over dose of coffee so I guess I'm OK.

I don't have to worry about the soda, haven't had a can of soda since high school. Can't stand the stuff.

My mother is 91 and takes no pills medical reasons and has drank coffee all her life. I am 70 and take no pills for medical reasons other than Advil. I have drank a lot of coffee from the time I was first married and working away from the farm back in 1956. I had six cups of coffee before I left the house this morning and a twelve cup pot this forenoon here at the office and just made the second twelve cup pot. Probly will not drink all of this one but the wife will make a pot as soon as we get home.
I know I am going to die but not sure coffee will be the cause.

Ken, I lke that one about stunts your growth. when I was a little kid, I wanted some of my grandad's coffee, He said in would turn your insides black. so I didn't want to have any black insides, so I didn't bother him about his coffee any more. It's funny of things you remember when you was little, but you can't remember what you did yesterday. Dave F.

I have had coffee since I was big enough to sit in my father's lap and take it from a teaspoon. I am 6'3". I also started smoking at 15. With the coffee stunting my growth, I guess I should be about 7 feet tall or more.

Hi Luke,

The best advice I received on using any product, is to look at YOUR past familys medical history. They will be the best guide for younger generations.

There's many people who can not take a abundance of a certian substance and die, then there's people can over use the same substance and never have any bad effects.

Strokes ran in my moms side of the family. My mother(60yo) died of a stroke just like her father(30yo). I take 1 asprin/day to keep from following in the same foot steps. I also have suggested that to my childeren when they get in the 50's age bracket. No cancer in the family.

My take on the so called experts in the field: There wrong 100% of the time. I'd rather take experience from ideas from long ago that's proven to work over time.

In the 70's bacon and coffee were screamed killers by the experts. Now coffee is rated tops for preventing heart disease. Bacon does something else benefical to health (colon?).

A friends grandson took too much vitamin C (health kick he said) and pert near killed himeself. It took several weeks in the hospital to save him.

The best written advice comes from the Holy Bible as it explains of what to eat and what not. I'm not talking the so called religious aspect part of substaning from some foods, but located in the book of Levicicus(sp?). Why? The book was written over 2thousand years ago so there's long time experience to gain knowledge from. Couple that along with your family's past
history and I figure I can't go wrong.

Luke, I drink about 1 and 1/2 pots per day I mix it 1/2 and 1/2 cafine and decafe if your concerned talk to your Dr. Ive been drinking the stuff for 36 years my Dr. says im ok. My 2 cents have a good weekend. John

I'm more concerned about that "white wine" thing. A couple of guys in Budweiser caps are gonna kick your @SS. :) But seriously, the science goes back and forth too much for a sane person to give a crap. I drink coffee every day, have for 35 years. If you like it,drink it. Giving up things you like won't make you live longer,it'll only seem longer.

Here's my story, always drank lots of coffee, 12/15 cups per day. Now have one kidney and it has stones, one Dr said no more coffee, another said it wont hurt to have a couple cups. Tried quitting cold and had headaches like you would not believe. Have one early and one about 10:. Every thing seems to be ok and I am happy (as a one eyed, one kidney, bald headed old fart can be).

Well, everything in moderation. Caffine is a drug, plain and simple. Legal, yes, and probably pretty harmless in small doses. However, you need to keep it in small doses. Probably a cup or two will not hurt, but consider other sources in your diet.... Soda pop, depending on brand can be a large source. Those energy drinks are even worse. Wife got into real trouble with heart rythm problems, from drinking caffine beverages. Had to quit, almost completely to keep her heart beating properly. Caffine can also be related to migrane headaches too. So keep it in moderation.

Okay, this is bit off the OT original but I am truly interested on how you guys prepare a GOOOOOOD pot of coffee... what I mean to say is that when you go to certain restaurants the coffee is reallllly GOOD but with others not so --- what''s the big SECRET ??????? How does one make a GOOD cup of coffee ?

Jim

To make good coffee, you MUST have good water. I mostly use softened water. When I can, during a rain shower, I collect rain water. This the best for good coffee. A water purifier on your kitchen tap will give good water also and is how the good restaurants process their water. Next, be sure you have a clean pot. I also add just a sprinkle of salt to the grounds to take out the bitter taste. My preferred coffee is Folger's Breakfast Blend... Gene

Watch the wine, the amount you drink will increase.soon you will be drinking every day, then the amount will increase as you get older you will start drinking midday then finally in the morning.Theres a shot of whiskey in a can of beer when it comes to alcohol content. Many fellows talk about drinking beer while working on their tractors.I dont want a drunk working on my tractor.I drink two cups of coffee a day.Wine beer whiskey vodka its all alcohol.Be careful with it.

My wife cant have caffine at all,no choclate even.Fellow I knew was hooked on Mountain Dew soda. The bed of his pickup was solid empty MD bottles two layers deep.Saw a TV bit were a fellow drank an energy drink while hooked to an ekg.Doc said his heart started skipping beats after he drank half the can.Oil is the most traded item on world markets, coffee is #2.
