Way OT: Johnson outboards

Yea I know this is a tractor board but,,,I know someone out there fishes from time to time so here is my question. How can I tell the year on my 115 Johnson v4 outboard? I need a starter, but they got to know the year, and I haven't a clue. Thanks

This may have changed but during the seventies and eighties OMC and Mercury used subtle colour differences to determine the years of the motors. For example a tan trim stripe distinguishes the '85 Mercury from the '83. If you spend some time on eBay looking at comparable motors for sale you can usually nail the year of a motor from its appearance.

Look at the seial number and it will have some letters in it. OMC uses INTRODUCES as their numbering system. Convert the letters to numbers using I as 1 and O as 5, etc. and you should be able to come up with the year unless it is too old. I believe they started this system in the 60's, maybe before.

The serial number is stamped in one of the freeze plugs on the top of the engine block. A dealer can look up the year from there or you can go to marineengine.com and find the year.

Correct with the word introduces it started in 1980 prior to that they used the year in the place where the letter are and Evinr. used a set of numbers. have a great day
