WC puller what gear?

I recently bought a WC Allis chalmers with a gleaner combine engine(4-1/8" pistons). I want to pull in the 3500# class. I have 18.4 -26s on the rear. Is it possible for me to spin the tires in second gear @ full throttle (2500 rpm) or should I stick with first gear? And does anybody know what kind of horsepower that engine will put out? I think its the gleaner with the letter m in the serial number.

WC"s are kinda fast in second, I imagine First will be all you can do. Should have about 55 hp. Will your rules let you run any 18.4. most will just let you run 15.5 X 38. or 13.6 X 38 . Tall tires are generally better. Vic

It depends on the sled, chain and track, etc. No one can tell you. Watch a few other tractors pull in the class.

But I can tell you that a WC is geared fast compared to others. The gear ratios I'm posting are in turns of crankshaft to turns of tires

WC
1st gear is 67 to 1
2nd gear is 46 to 1
3rd gear is 35 to 1

WD45
1st is 84 to 1
2nd is 52.5 to 1
3rd is 40 to 1

Write these down, may come in handy when watching other tractors and picking the gear. Or in a "low gear class" the WC is at an advantage.

You should be able to get around 60hp out of it with a little head work. You can change gears in the rear end, replace with RC gears, and I know you could run second still quite a bit faster that what your running in 1st now. Also,I agree, taller tires seem to do better, even if you had to stay in first gear. I would say in first gear you could run 16.9 X 34 or a 15.5 X 38 easily with that many rpms. Track tightness will make a huge difference from pull to pull. Good Luck!

don't sweat about what the other allis tractors.are doing wx45 could have a d17 ring gear or a diesel ring gear and the wc could have a dc ring gear with a step up or step down box. The sweat will be getting those short fat tires hooked up.

Thanks for all the input! I can pull any gear I want as long as I stay under 7.5 mph. My tires are off a gleaner combine. Everybody else in that class is running out of power with their big 38s in 1st gear. So maybe I'll have a good chance till I find a pair of 38s this winter. Anybody have a stroked allis engine for sale?

Forgot to say I can run any size tire up to 24.5-38 as long as I'm not over 96 inches wide overall. Thanks guys.
