Wd Dirty gastank

I have a wd with about 1" thick old gas Its like tar I have cleand lots of tanks before but this one has me stuck. I can seem to get the crap out Ive rinsed it out with keroscene but thats not working. Ive heard of rinsing it out with a hose or pressure washer But will that rust the tank? what other ways could i use to clean the tank. Thanks.

I had a Farmall M like that. I did not find any solvent that would cut it. I pulled the settling bowl and let it drain for a couple of months. It finally got down to a small amount on the bottom. I put a stand pipe in the settling bowl so that the black crap would stay out of the fuel system.

Hope someone knows what might work. I tried lacquer thinner, zylol, toluene, mineral spirits, and a couple of others. Lacquer thinner worked the best. After draining to get out most, pouring a gallon of lacquer thinner in there might get it's viscouscity low enough to get out some more.

Id take it to a radiator shop and have them boil it out, OR put some carb cleaner (we get 5 gals at a time) and let it sit and roll it over once in a while. If you got varnish and rust I would put in a piece of chain or large nuts in it and do the same. Bare metal and water = RUST

Pressure washer should work, steam cleaner would be even better. Dry it out- maybe use a hair dryer for that- rinse it with diesel fuel and the residue should prevent any rust. Wouldn't hurt to coat it with a tank liner like Johnson's or similar when dry.

Go to NAPA and buy a small can of acetone.
I'm not saying it will work but I would try it.

I had a half gallon of acetone. It did nothing with my stuff. I still have the can but forgot to include on the first post.

Try some seafoam and strap it on a paint shaker

I have used lacquer thinner with good results. A good auto parts store carries a liquid to pour into the tank to line and seal it also.

I have heard of some people putting small nuts in the tank and filling it with your favorite solvent and then strap it to a rear wheel of another tractor and drive around for awhile. The motion and the nuts works good I guess to break up the sludge and any rust in there. I had a tank boiled out once and that worked well, but it does take the paint off of the outside as well. Since I had it done, I have not had any problems.

If you don't mind the paint coming off the outside of the tank, soak it in Drano or any other drain cleaner with a lot of lye in it. I bought some 100 gallon plastic stock tanks at ACE hardware and made one bath with drain cleaner, and another with a solution of phosphoric acid (OSPHO brand, get it at ACE or a paint store). The Drano bath will eat the gum and crap out of the tank, and the OSPHO will dissolve the rust. Tank steel isn't touched by either solution but the shutoff valve will be destroyed in the lye tank, so take it off and use a cork,etc. You have to take the usual safety measures like gloves and goggles, and a pressure washer is required to get a good clean on things, but this does work.
