wd engine running faster than normal fast idle

If I start my wd it runs so fast I have to shut it off right away. It runs faster than it is made to run and there is no way to slow it down other than to pull the choke hard. That keeps it under control.

Once upon a time I had the governor come apart while I was plowing. revved up the engine realfast. No control whatsoever. Kept the plow in the ground til I got to the end of the field closest to the house. Wish I had that on video. might check that.

Are your throttle control rods all hooked up properly?
Had one lose the cotter pin and fall off right at the carb.
Made for a hair raising ride down the highway one afternoon.

definetly check the gov. weights if they have broken i hope they havent damaged the cam gear on your tractor. everytime i sling a set it knocks some teeth off the gear.

A little more info. I tried a test that I found earlier on this site. Pushed the rod from the butterfly on the carb toward the radiator and it was hard to push and sprang back so I passed that test I think. However if I had the idle back to the very slowest it would go there was no tension on the rod between the governor and carb. I felt inside the end of governor and the weights were attached and intact.

turn the idle screw on the carb shaft out some.

yeah,, you oughta try that with a load of hay and no working kill switch... just a Gas Line SHUT OFF valve for Shut DOWN ,on a DC Case ,,WHEW WEE he really got to crankin !!

mlplankey is right had the same thing happen on my Model D grader. High RPM or stopped. Needed new govnernor, new cam gear because the weights fell apart and tore up the cam gears and the gov gears. If this happened need to take apart the engine. First ck out all the easy stuff like loose linkages and stuff, If NO HELP then remove the gov from the engine and ck out the weights and the cam gear, then you will know. Been There Done That. NOTE. If you dont find any easy stuff missing dont restart the engine till you ck out the Gov weights because all those loose broken parts are NO GOOD in there.
