WD runs rough

[U 1948]

My WD runs really rough unless I pull the choke out 95%. I replaced the plugs, made sure the fuel line is clear and checked the filter on the settling bulb for dirt. I has a Marvel Schebler Carburetor on it. Ground is drying out and need to get her going. Any help is appreciated.

Pull the drain plug out of the bottom of the carb. Then turn on the gas and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas for 5 plus minutes. Catch the gas and then look at it to make sure its not full of rust etc. Also pull the main jet adjustment screw out and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas out of it. You can also spray carb cleaner into the main jet with the drain plug out to help clean it out. Sounds like the main jet is clogged up

It sounds like a possible dirt in the carb, but I have had Ignition points cause similar problems. Another posible cause could be a sticking valve changeing the mixture for the other cyclinders.

While running, spray starting fluid around the intake manifold gaskets to ensure none are leaking. If you have been using E-10 fuel, you may have ruined gaskets in the carburetor.

I had a WD45 running rough too and I had the same issues as you do with the choke. I played with carb a little first, and still had the problem. First, take the carb apart and blow out the main jet and all other passages with carb cleaer and an air compressor. Also blow out fuel line to the carb. I think that should do it. If you have rust or crud in the tank, stick a small tube in the top opening of the sediment bulb so it doesnt suck crud off the bottom and keeps it out of the bulb and out of the lines/carb. I did that, and mine runs great again.

Also try taking off the gas cap. The cap may not be vented and causing the issue.

Any time the tractor runs better with the choke on there is a lean condition, either not enough fuel to carb(plugged filter/screen, vent on cap, plugged line, sticking float needle. clogged jets),OR a vacuum leak(carb to manifold, manifold to head). Possibly but not usual if machine works when choked is a stuck valve.

could be dirt or water in the carb, i have a tractor just that and cleaned the carb out ant replaced the gaskets, and adjusted the carb and now runs good..

If the fuel system checks out OK, replace the condenser -- my WD had similar symptoms. After checking, rechecking, etc. the fuel system to death, I changed the points and condenser (out of desperation) and it ran fine after that. Good Luck................RP

If none of the other suggestions work, put an electric fuel pump in the line and push the fuel into the carb.

One suggestion I did not see is to check the metering jet to make sure it has not been replaced with one that is too small...

Finally got my WD running and she runs like a top. A very good friend of mine stopped and suggested I should try and change the manifold gaskets. It was the manifold gaskets, once replaced she ran like the tractor I grew up with. Through it all the fuel system is cleaned and various bolts etc. were tightened. The manifold is snugged up but I wonder if anyone here knows how many pounds of torque is need for the brass nuts that hold it on?

I had to give it a try and dug out my old 4 section harrow and dragged it across the garden, tough pull but in 2nd. gear she didn't have any trouble, just wouldn't want to try it for very long a lot of lugging.
