Could someone point me to a website with a picture of an Autolite starter for a WD? I bought a starter on eBay that is supposed to be an Autolite for a WD, which I was planning to use to replace my Delco starter, but it has a two bolt mounting flange that doesn't match anything on my tractor, and the pinion gear isn't the same size. So I'm wondering whether the guy selling me the starter was wrong about it.

Old, can't he rob parts from the one and make the other work. If I remember right a neighbor did that when he dropped a WD starter and busted the housing. Or does it need to be a Delco housing?

That might be a good idea, but I'm going to send the wrong one back. As soon as I realized it was wrong, I took my Delco starter to a guy in town to be rebuilt. He's done work for me before and I think it will be under $150.

Another problem with trying to use parts from another tractor's starter is the possibility of it turning in the wrong direction. The WD's starter inserts from the rear rather than the front as most other common starters. I found this out when attempting to install parts from a '52 olds starter into the starter on my '52 WD.

Thats why I stated from a mercruiser. if it bolts in the front it turns clockwise if it bolts in the rear it turns counterclockwise.

You can rebuild your own starter. I found an outfit on ebay that sells rebuild kit for darn near any starter, generator or alternator. I've rebuilt several of my starters now and it has run about 30 bucks each. It's fun to. PK

I probably should have done that, and it would have been a lot cheaper. My concern was that, in my ignorance, I wouldn't replace everything that needed replacing and that as a result I wouldn't improve things much.
