We Used To .....

Morse code radio transmissions reminds me of the movie Phenomenon. Forest Whitiker and John Travolta.
Whitaker picks up a fast stream of noise, Travolta deciphers it and later has Whitaker send back,

Don't over water the marigolds

Later in the movie the air force shows up.
They were not too happy.

Been an AM radio fan all my life and its on right now. As I kid I liked to tune in the old blue plastic Westinghouse on cold winter nights when it could pull in the U.S. stations. I had saved quite a list of different stations I picked up. Of course they faded in and out. WLS comes to mind. There was one in Kalispell, Montana too.

And I still do.. listen to AM radio for a total of 66 years so far. I am in alberta and its CFCW 840 on the dial. And it covers most of the province. The radios in the shop and pump house never get shut off and play 24 hrs a day. That station has been on air since 1953 and 70 year anniversary. One time at work I gave the boss a ride with my truck and he said u listen to am radio, well ya. He was surprised. I dont like FM.

Ah yes A M radio . back in 69 one warm early may Saturday evening after the WATERING HOLES closed two farmall 450 diesels got fired up and went to the fields to get the conture strips plowed , both 450'd had matching plows and I H radio's mounted on the steering column both were straight piped W BZ out of Boston was coming in like the tower was across the road not 5-600 miles away There was NOT a living sole with in two miles of us . Radio's blasting to over come the straight pipes , around 3:30 Am as i am coming to the head land and my buddy is at the other end of the field i see a car drive on by and go to the cross roads and turn around and come back and stop . I can't see the car down on the road as there was a high bank between the fields and road , but i could see a figure coming up over the bank in the moon light , those old 4411 bulbs did not light up that much . As i get CLOSER I CAN SEE IT IS A COUNTY DEPUTY . Wonder what he wants Oh it's Howard Gray we know him , I lift the plows and come out of the furrow and stop and get off the tractor to see what he wants , as i ideal mine down i also turn the radio down and get off and walk over to Howard . Howard speaks first and say , ya know i don't mind your TWO working into the WEEEE HOURS of the morning , i don't mind the straight pipes . BUT the radio's are a bit loud as we got a complainant about the music . I asked where from and he said down at the lake ya can hear the radio on BOTH TRACTOR IN STEREO down there ( that was five or so miles away , the wind and the sound was carrying down thru the valley as Howard said he could hear it plain as day and took him over and hour tracking where it came from ,he could not hear the engines of the tractor just the radio , by then my buddy comes up and gets off to se what is going on . He and i got a Chuckle out of it . BUT to keep piece and the natives happy we pulled the straight pipes and put the mufflers back on and own we could turn down the radios .Guess someone did not like rock and roll down there . Howard made several trips out to the farm back then due to our party's. we use to have . When we had a party all the watering holes were empty and the top two hay field were packed with cars . We provided a place and a live band and a bond fire you could see from outer space and it was BYOB , they started when the sun set and ran till the sun came up . Howard would always stop by to check on us and get some refreshments .

Growing up in NE Ohio we would listen to WTAM 1100 out of Çleveland ( was WWWE for a while) and 1480 WHBC out of Canton. My Dad would have us all stop working and listen to Paul Harvey, fund memories. I sure miss things like Paul Harvey "News and Comment" and "The Rest of the Story". My Dad loved listening to Pete Franklin, a sports commentator in the evenings.

I remember that movie. I really enjoyed it, but I think it had a sad ending. Seems like the guy had a brain tumor. I'd like to watch it again.

I took care of the transmitter plant and directional antenna at WSBT here in South Bend for 10 years, 1987-97. It got out amazingly well for 5KW on 960. Five towers, DA-2. Night pattern was all straight north, you couldn't get the station five miles south of the xmtr. but it came in like a local 250 miles north of here. We had reception reports from Europe where the signal had gone over the North pole and down into Europe.

(quoted from post at 17:00:32 11/29/23) Absolutely nothing good on FM radio nowadays. All I listen to is a.m. and thats not very good anymore either. And dont get me started on TV. Literally throw your televisions away you will be happier.
ou sure got that RIGHT!

(quoted from post at 16:32:31 11/29/23) Diode+coil+headphone in pillow picked up 50,000 watt station in Omaha 80 miles away all night long. Later listened to WWL in New Orleans, WLS Chicago, KOMA, Oklahoma City, A Dallas station WBAP? on old car radio with a junk battery and charger most nights in bed. Now usually Earl May's old station KMA out of Shenandoah, IA, That's where the Everly Brothers started singing on their way to school in the 50's.

Yep, I listened to Joe Soucheray when I was on the mail route, plus the national talk show host who came on right before him.
One of the FM stations around here now plays reruns of the old Casey Casem shows on the weekends.
