The old fly specked AM radio in the milk parlor had Walter Winchell and Edward R. Murrow telling how things were in the world and Pat Boone selling our milk via radio commercials. One never outgrows the need you know. gm

No real training at that time. We just strapped a belt with a hook around our waste. That was it for safety equipment. You had to be careful. Never gave falling a thought besides know what the result would be if I did. It was in the 1980s when I was a poor family man that would do anything legal for a dollar. Yes it is/was dangerous. Modern OSHA rule require certification now days with anti fall harness.

Didnt know we had so many RF nerds on this site. Once upon a time I held an FCC 1st Class Radio Telephony License. They were later all revised to a non-expiring General Class License back in the 80s or 90s. If you had one, Im sure it was demeaning to you when got a meaningless General Class License because, particularly if you had a 1st Class. Because you would have studied hard, as I did to pass the 2nd class, 1st class and radar endorsement tests. Not much studying for the 3rd class which was the license required if you were a DJ at a station back in the day and a perquisite to taking the 2nd class test. I am proud to say I was one of the few who passed each test the first time I took them back in the 70s.

The FCC allowed 5000 watts radio and the Wolfman transmitted from Mexico at 50,000 watts You could hear him in Canada ! The filaments on the headlights in the parking lot would glow and everyone got headaches a lot.

That's a fancy crystal set with that variable cap. Ours had a slider on the coil for tuning.

Grew up in NW Kansas. Loved AM radio when they used real DJ's. I and a friend made/had a crystal radio that we listened to at the Friday night high school football games. It was more entertaining. Teen years could get KOMA out of Oklahoma City most of the time. Could bet WSM most of the time on Friday and Saturday night shows. When a freshman in high school, Dad bought me a realtone 10 transistor radio for my birthday. That radio went everywhere with me. Listened to Kennedy's body arriving back in DC while milking in the barn. Remember hearing the weekly casualty figures from Vietnam. Later in life having moved to western Nebraska listened to KSL from Salt Lake. They had 4 or 5 hours of suspense stories at night while working in the shop. Could get KOMA in Basic at Ft. Bliss TX most of the time. Could get WLS from Chicago at Ft Rucker AL most of the time. Still listen to political commentary on AM. Lots of memories.

hank you. I was so young, I'm not sure I knew what I was doing.. I could simply use a diode and earphone and touch it to the electrical outlet plate screw and listen in the classroom in school house without th teacher noticing. :).

From eastern panhandle of WV I can pick up WWVA, Wheeling, WV, Chicago, Richmond, Boston and beyond. Some must be Canadian as it is in French. I have a Westinghouse console radio from bout 1938. Michael
