Weak Coil or ?

Have a 52 8N, side mount, 6V. Only had a short time and today I got to use it hard for about two hours plowing. Motor shut down and would not restart. Pull coil wire and only had about 1/8 inch or smaller yellow spark. Let it set about a half hour and test again. !/4 inch or more and blue spark. So my question is before I start replacing electical parts do you guys think it is the coil. Also I am really confused about this resistor thing. Where is it. I have looked at the parts being sold on this site and can find nothing on the tractor that even resembles anything in the parts section. So where is it and what does it do.

If stock 1952 8N you can look until you are blue in the face....it doesn't have a resistor. Those coils, unlike those square plastic coils on earlier units, are pretty robust.....seldom fail....but everything can.

Maybe problem solved. Just checked my point gap and it had closed up 10 thou since I last set them (4 hours run) So I guess this tractor come with those four hour points. Will find out tomorrow when plow again.

my 1950 8n always closes new points.
Every time I replace them, i run it for a couple of hours then reset the points, after that they'll be fine for several years till time to replace them again.
never figured out why but it has allways done it.

You guys with the points that "close"... are you using lube?

Have you taken a CLOSE look at the breaker cam for rust/roughness/wear?

A tight point gap will make the coil run hot.Ive replaced coils on the 49 53 Ford V8s.The points were badly burned and very close.I have replaced some of these foolproof coils out on the road at night.I used to carry a spare in my 36 coupe for my friends who drove Fords. We know that magnetism dissapears in steel if you get it hot enough.Dose it weaken as the coil heats? Could this be the reason spark improves as the coil cools.
