weed killer Roundup???

Hey folks,
Is there such thing as a weed killer that kills weeds (and dandelions) and leaves the grass alone, other than me pulling them one by one and burning them? I'm about on my last nerve with nettle and in one pasture, dandelions. If roundup will do it, what do you folks pay? It's cheaper to use gasoline here in Germany.

Thanks, Dave

Yeah, common name is Weed-B-Gone, it's a glyphosate product. Kills most broadleaf weeds, but won't kill grasses. For some weeds, like clover, it helps to mix some dish soap in with it to get it into the plant. Greatest thing in the world for killing nettles. Also works on dandelions, but I find that for those I need two applications, and I generally mix it double strength for dandelions.

From glennster's 2 4d link.

"After 60 years of use, 2,4-D is still the third most widely used herbicide in the United States and Canada".

What is the first and second most widely used?

BUT.........I hate buts..but anyway. 2-4-D works really well. I sprayed alf with last fall left the grass killed everything else. BUT...If you have a nice stand of grass and clover it takes out the clover. I have a nice stand of tim, brome, alf, clover and weeds but I refuse to shoot the weeds for clover alf sake. I figure get the grass thickened up and the weeds go bye bye. Good Luck

2-4-D is great in a pasture. I found out first hand that it'll take out small trees within 75 feet of where you spray it on a calm day!
The weed-b-gone bar that drags on the ground will eliminate the drift killing trees close by.

Oops, yer right, the active ingredient in Weed Be Gone is 2,4D. Either way, it's been very effective against nettles for me.

You can also use A-mine 400 and it wasn't too expensive the last time I bought some at the local TSC or farm store. Used it to spray in fense line around pastures, grass is still there.

Round up will kill grass and broadleaf weeds. 2,4,-D will kill broadleaf weeds. Read the label for what it will control and for how much to apply. It's been around since the late '40s and it's safe and pretty cheap. It's hell on dandelions, etc and is used in weed 'n feed fertilizers.

I've been using REDEEM R&P with excellant results-kills flat weeds and leaves grass in good shape, in fact if you put fertilizer with Redeem it helps in killing weed + makes grass nice and green where sprayed.I use it on Hawk weed for about 5-6 yrs.

Anything with MSMA in it will kill a lot of weeds but not kill bermuda grass. I dont know what kind of grass you have, maybe worth a try.

Without reading the rest of the replies, Roundup was designed in the 70's as a grass killer, it is only effective on broadleaves when mixed with something else. 2,4-D is fairly effective on dandelions, they need to be sprayed when small, and it may take more than one application. You can also spray them in the fall, though and try to prevent seed production. Dandelions are a biannual. Foliage one year, seed head the next. If the new ones are killed before emergence of the seed, no seed no weeds. Banvel is probably more effective -- don't know what Banvel will do to your particular grass, though. Best to ask what in the US is a County Agent.

Buy the 4 lb/gallon 2,4-D from a farm store, preferably amine because of less volatility -- what you just purchased is very dilute. Farm use 2,4-D needs to be applied at about 1 lb/A to have much effect. Lower rates of 0.5-0.75 lbs/A can give control, but conditions, weed size, etc have to be just right.

Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup, the grass will be dead. Also the "Roundup" name is now being used for products other than Roundup -- I believe all such products have some Roundup in them though. I pay no attention to such discount/Home Depot products though, preferring to buy the real stuff and mix it myself.

I think it"s been clearly answered, but glyphosate is non-selective-kills every thing. Trimec, as mentioned below, is actually three selective (kills broadleaves only) chemicals, 2-4,D, mecoprpop and dicamba. It takes the guess work out of weed I.D. BudWV,The trees that were killed might have been drift but careful on very calm mornings when fog would likely form (a temperature inversion), you can get a concentrated "cloud" of drift, that will really do some damage. And Sunspot, I think the top two most used herbicides are Atrazine, metachlor (Dual) and 2-4,D. I have high hopes of becoming the herbicide expert on this site one day, since my mechancal skills are still in their infancy.

As for the dandelions they are eatable in the spring before they
flower. So next spring before you spray them harvest them.

24D comes in 2 forms esther which will drift and amine which won,t so if spraying close to wifes flowers use Amine esther will give better weed control if you have open area Hope this helps
