Hey John Deere Experts ! ,. . .I noted something interesting while leisurely reading my C.H. Wendell book of Nebraska Tractor Tests.
The 4010 was tested at 84 pto horse but only weighed 7000 lbs (without ballast). The 4020 3 years later was tested at 95 pto horse but weighed a beefy 8700 lbs (without ballast).
Did Deere engineers decide the 4010 was way too light for such horsepower and then 'heavy up' the 4020 when it was designed ?
My neighbor has a 4010, seems like a great old tractor, but I was suprised to see it isn't much heavier than my Dad's old Farmall 656 (62 pto h.p. at 6600 lbs.) However, my Dad's Farmall 766 weighs in at a beefy 9300 lbs. but is rated at a very similar pto horsepower than the 4010 (85 pto).
So, it appears John Deere Heavied up their tractors to weights similar to Farmall for their 20 series tractors.
Similar observation on the 3010 vs 3020.
Any comments on this? Also, exactly what did John Deere do to pack on extra weight on dimensionally similar tractors (4010 vs 4020)?
Thanks, Ross.
