Welding gloves and jacket

Personally I prefer a sleeved short cape and an apron. Seems to give me better flexibility. Those and a good pair of gauntleted golves, heavy for stick welding, deer or pigskin for MIG.
Works for me!

TJM I think it all depends on what type of welding you're doing. For the type of welding I do now a days I like the green jackets. But back when I did it for a living I liked a leather coat, or sleeves. For a steady diet of carbon arcing, or laying under something welding overhead nothing beats a leather coat. For most overhead welding a pair of leather sleeves is good enough. Far as gloves, there again depends, running dual shield or Innershield in the 400 to 500 amps range, thick is good. Tig welding I like the Ove-Glove.

The really comfortable gloves are a little pricey. I get lined gloves and just try a few different kinds(or pairs)on to see what's the most comfortable for my budget. They all get burned up eventually but the better gloves come in different sizes instead of the one size fits all $6 gloves. I like the gloves that have an extra leather patch on the back. They keep the heat away better when using a cutting torch but I also wear an aluminized heat shield over the glove if I'm doing a lot of cutting. Don't use TIG gloves for stick welding. They will get burned just from some of the spatter.

I had a half jacket because it's lighter. Now they make jackets with burn resistant fabric that are lighter than full leather jackets. You need to see what's available at the welding supply or work wear store. Dave

I had a nice new pair of blue & grey welding gloves and it wasn't long before they started getting dirty. Is there any home method of cleaning them? How about the older ones that have gotten really bad?

An Oveglove? Interesting! Do you have the ones with the silicone grippers?
A little expensive but so is a good pair of leather gloves.
Have you found any where that sells them for less that $15 a piece?

I"m just an occaisional welder, but my brother does it for a living as did my dad. A while back he gave me a pair of Tillman gloves and they are the best work gloves I"ve ever had the pleasure of wearing. There are numerous models, but the pair he gave me are the Mig 1350"s. They are comfortable and tough as nails. The pair I have are XL and I can slip a pair of brown jerseys on firtst so as to keep a bit warmer. I"ve used them mainly for rock picking and am really pleased with their performance. Never heard of them before this.

Yes Chris(WA) I use the gloves with the silicone grippers. I only use the Ove-Glove to Tig weld with. Generally only use one at a time, torch hand, very seldom do I use a glove on the hand that feeds filler rod. If you don't use the glove for anything but Tig welding they last for months, maybe even a year. I really like how flexible they are, and how much protection they give from heat! When Tig welding aluminum I can just slide the torch hand along without worrying about my hand getting too hot. Generally I don't buy them my self, with this economy they make great Christmas, father's day, and birthday gifts from the kids / grandkids. Usually I get T-shirts, but I got enough T-shirts to last me the rest of my life.

I am just a hobbyist but I have three different weights of gloves. I keep them by the welder and try not to use them for anything else.
I have a light pair for tig welding, a medium pair for mig and a longer heavier pair for the heavier stuff such as stick welding, cutting and grinding.
I try to keep myself from picking up the hot parts with the gloves because the fingers will shrink and ruin the glove in a hurry.
I cannot recommend a type but just purchase what feels good for the application.

Good idea on getting them as a gift from someone that doesn't know what to get you. I have a lifetime suppy of tee's also, but hope to out live my welding gloves!
The ove'gloves sound like a good idea. Thanks!

Just burn a bunch of 6010 overhead and you'll go through those T-shirts at an unbelieveable rate. LoL BTDT. Dave

Heavy long sleeve, cotton shirt and Blue Beast gloves. That will do ya. PS, put your pants over your boots. Don't ask why :o
