welding Massey casting?

I have a Massey Ferguson 165 diesel that was rolled. The steering box mounting ear on transmission/engine adapter plate is broken. Also the steering box mounting corners are also broken. Does welding the plate without splitting the tractor sound doable. What rod should I use? will an AC welder work ok? Use the same rod for the box? I have welded a few engine blocks with nickel rod.

Chances are that is cast iron and if you have to ask what rod to use, don't touch it. Take it to a welder that knows what they are doing.

Very good advice! No sense attempting to fix it only to have it break again at the worst time. A specialty welding shop would be your best bet.

hat, my friend, is NOT advice, but is criticism..........unwarranted! You don't know the right rod.............do you?

He may know, or he may not... the ADVICE given is to get a PROFESSIONAL welder to look at it...

My ADVICE is to replace the broken pieces with NEW pieces...

what metal would the adapter plate be made of? cast-steel or nodular iron? I could put a lot of build up around the mounting ear.

It was meant to be advice. And I do know what rods to use. I have been welding for over 50 years. His question shows he has little or no experiance welding cast iron. & An expensive casting is not to be practing on with rods he has never used before. Does he have the proper equipment to preheat it and cool it slowly after welding?
