Well Problems

After running my well for 6 weeks non stop for irrigation purposes it now has something going on I don't understand. The water in the house out of the taps now pulsates. Also, the lines hammer when running water and hammer about every minute when not. I checked the well and it is losing pressure but I find no apparent leaks inside or outside. When the pressure drops to 40 it will kick in for a second or two and then shut off. Any ideas? Thanks.

You might have air in your tank. Mine pulsated and kicked on every few seconds, also. My tank is above ground and I shut off the electricity and removed the pressure guage... Hang onto it good as you remove it; it will take off from the air pressure if you let it go. After a couple of minutes of WHOOOSH!, the air was gone and I put it back together. Don"t know how the air got in, but it"s OK now, a year later.

Sounds like a water loged pressure tank to me.

This may be the problem your pipe in the well that goes to the pump. It has rusted through and is leaking above the pump. Had a similar problem. If you have to replace the pipe DONT USE KOREAN PIPE from Home Depot!

But as said earlier the first thing I would check the tank to make sure it wasn't water logged

I put up with that for years, till I finally broke down and bought a tank with a bladder in it. "Poof"...no more problems in the past 3 years.

Yeah, that's right! Waterlogged. That was the term the guy used when I explained my problem.

Yes sound right. If you have an old tank with out a bladder shut off the pump and turn on a faucet and let off all the pressure. Then open up the water pipes into the tank and let a lot of the water glurg out. Put the pipes back together, shut the faucet and restart the pump. If you have a pressure tank with a bladder, the bladder may have developed a leak letting water get above it where there should be only air. If so you need a new tank.

The tank is water logged. You need to shut off the power to the pump and let the water run till it stops, then if the tank has one of those little tire air valves, you pump some air in and let out some more water till it works good again. It seems like we had to put in about 50 or more lbs of air in ours.

They are supposed to have air in them. Some have an innertube type of bladder full of air; some just have air in the top 1/2, water in the bottom.

The ones without a bladder - the air disolves into the water over time, & loses air. Need to add air every few months or year.

The ones with a bladder - seems they have troubles too, bladder fails, then they fill with water.

'Letting the air out' would be an odd problem that would typically make things worse, unless you have a bladder system & the water part of it filled with air to more than the pressure switch level - a very odd situation......

Yup, water logged tank (loss of air cushion)
Going through that drill right now myself. You can replace the bladder/s but they only last about five years or so.

benny2,What is the problem with Home Depot KOREAN PIPE?
Don't know if it was made in Korea or not but I just bought some from Home Depot.
They don't put on the package where most things are made anymore, it might say "imported for...." and that's it.
