wet lime -dry lime

i was told by a mine employee the only diffrince beetween wet lime and dry lime was at the mine they dump the wet lime in a pile and let it rain on it, if that is the case a lot of money is wasted transporting water, when you could just buy dry lime dump it and let it rain on it, is this right??

if your going to spread it but it dry and keep it dry.

I'm not sure how wet is 'wet'. Most of the quarries here pile it outside. It depends on how much it rains how much water you get in a load. I like to buy it during dry weather when they are running fresh lime on top of the pile. But, sometimes you just cant pick.

By wet lime do you mean liquid lime that is hauled in tankers? Liquid lime comes out of drinking water treatment plants. Its super fine and reacts in the soil very fast. No-tillers really like it. Its supposed to be cheaper that regular lime, I'm skeptical. I have two big complaints with liquid lime. Number one is compaction. You can see in the spring were the tankers drove in the fall. Because of all the water I've seen the tankers drive in the same track 2-3 times to get enough on. Second problem is that they won't VR spread the liquid. In this area I wouldn't touch lime that ain't VR spread. Had one 40 that had 15 acres that needed no lime. Then an acre of it needed 6 ton and the rest need 1-4 ton. try to average a field like that. To much lime is a bad thing.

around my area a lot of guys spread lime with a spinner and buy "wet lime" from the fertelizer distribuitor because it is supposed to be heavier and spread better, but they buy it from the mine 200 miles away as wet lime and transport it , so my question is really wet lime just dry lime that has been rained on or has it been treated, if it is just rained on lime the local farmers are wasteing a lot of money transporting rain water.
